Estrellita - My grandmother loved this song and she loved America. She was a daughter of Aguascalientes, Mexico, but fled her country, with her extended family, to find safety from violent political turmoil and a new life as a citizen of America. Grandma raised my Dad in the vibrant immigrant community of Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles, working long hours in the garment district as a seamstress, along with her sisters. It was a hard, but joyful life, living out the promise of the American dream and making it possible for her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren to live the dream. Her story is the story of America, a story of hope, of freedom and dreams fulfilled - dreams that must never be extinguished.
