"Flowers in a Glass Vase," Juan de Arellano, 1668.
De Arellano (1614-76) was a Spanish Baroque painter who is now regarded as one of Spain's great still life artists.
Born and educated in and around Madrid, he reportedly chose floral still lifes as a specialty for a very pragmatic reason: they sold, and were easier for him than portraits or landscapes. Specializing in a popular form of art meant he got to charge well, because he was also a meticulous artisan.
Here we have a colorful bunch of flowers that seems chaotic and messy, but when you take a step back, there's a real symmetry there. The flowers are depicted in great detail; not exactly a Rachel Ruysch level of detail, but what it? He possessed exceptional technique and a masterful eye, in giving us a riot of color without overdoing it (as other Spanish floral painters sometimes did) and combining his use of color with depictions of light; notice how some flowers are more muted because they're in shadow.
Many say they find his work sincere and joyful, and I can see why. He may have been in it for the money, but he did it well.
