Europa op de Museumkaart

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Wednesday, June 24 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

We need to talk about BlackRock

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Monday, June 29 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

A deep dive into the world’s most powerful money machine.

What do Shell, ING and ASML have in common? Their largest shareholder is BlackRock. This titan of an asset manager has a colossal, invisible grip on businesses worldwide. Chances are you’re connected to them too, without even knowing it, since BlackRock manages the pension money of over 7 million Dutch citizens. For decades, they operated in the shadows. But nowadays, this giant is facing massive backlash. Not only because their investments link them to the genocide in Gaza, but also because they remain one of the biggest backers of the fossil fuel industry. Bowing to pressure from US Republicans just before Trump’s second term, BlackRock even pulled out of major climate pacts, leaving Dutch pension funds (that do have green goals) feeling extremely frustrated.

In a Volkskrant interview, BlackRock’s Dutch country manager Monique Donders claims to be tired of being talked about, and not talked to. Well, consider this an invitation. Do they dare show up, or will they keep their doors shut? Either way: this conversation needs to happen. Join us this evening at Pakhuis de Zwijger for a deep dive into BlackRock. A conversation about power, morality and what on earth is happening with your money.

Sudan, Remember Us!

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Thursday, June 25 at 07:30 PM GMT+2

How can the spirit of the Sudanese revolution shape its future?

In the spring of 2019, director Hind Meddeb visits the capital, Khartoum, for the first time. There, she meets young artists and activists – Shajane, Muzamil, Maha, Rufaida, Hamza, and Eros – in a remarkably optimistic mood. The dictatorial regime has just been overthrown, and through strikes and prolonged sit-ins they are fighting for freedom and democracy. Sudan, Remember Us follows how these young people, despite arrests and brutally suppressed protests, strengthen their revolution with poetry and music. ‘Words are stronger than bullets’ is their mantra. For a long time, fear is drowned out by hope but in this film, Meddeb brings together fragments of that hope once again.

In this programme Ahmed Muzamil Member of resistance committees & member of the mortal mural initiative Fatima Zainalabdin Pharmacist, entrepreneur, and founder of the Sudan Futures Platform Imad Babbiker Non-violence civil society campaigner & human rights defender Mohammed Abdulrahman Journalist

The film serves as the starting point for an in-depth conversation with members of the Sudanese diaspora in the Netherlands, who experienced the revolution from within: Ahmed Muzamil, who was a member of one of the ‘resistance committees’ in Khartoum that shaped the revolution and who also appears in the film. Fatima Zainalabdin, entrepreneur and founder of the Sudan Futures Platform, who facilitated access to essential medicines. Imad Babbiker, a dedicated activist who trained young people in nonviolent resistance and Mohammed Abdulrahman, a prominent journalist who was appointed during Hamdok’s transitional government to reform the news service SUNA (Sudan News Agency). The moderator of the dialogue is Osama Idries, who is a strategic advisor at the FNV Academy in the Netherlands and a facilitator on themes of social justice and societal change.

What lessons can we draw from that hopeful moment in 2018–19? How are these young people who led the revolution continuing their struggle today? How can we better center their experiences, perspectives, and knowledge? And how can Sudanese people – both within Sudan and across the diaspora – build on these experiences to prepare for a peaceful and just future once the war comes to an end?

More about the speakers

Currently, she is committed to humanitarian aid, policy, and initiatives for the Sudanese diaspora in the Netherlands to promote a future-oriented approach for Sudan.

Imad Babbiker is an activist for nonviolent resistance within civil society and a human rights defender. In the mid-eighties, when he worked as a manager for the catering service of Sudan Airways, he was active in the Sudanese trade union movement. For the past twenty years, until the outbreak of the war in April 2023, Imad was actively involved in the nonviolent resistance movement in Sudan.

Mohammed Abdulrahman is a prominent journalist who was appointed to reform the main news service SUNA (Sudan News Agency) during Hamdok’s transitional government.

Osama Idries is a strategic advisor at the FNV Academy and a facilitator on themes of social justice and societal change. As an activist, he is committed to human rights, diversity & inclusion, and international peace, with a focus on connection and dialogue.

Solidarity in Sync: Navigating a Unified Strategy

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Thursday, June 11 at 07:30 PM GMT+2

Bridging institutional power and grassroots action for the Global Palestine Movement. Solidarity in Sync: Navigating a Unified Strategy is a crucial convergence bridging the gap between institutional power and frontline activism. This evening brings together politicians, legal minds, academics and grassroots organisers to forge a coordinated, collective strategy for the global Palestine movement. Central to this gathering is the honouring of our frontline heroes. We proudly welcome home the ‘Sumudees’, the courageous participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla. By anchoring their lived experience of seafaring resistance to high-level political and legal advocacy, we transform raw solidarity into an unbreakable, unified front capable of navigating the path toward Palestinian liberation.

Flotilla

The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international movement of coordinated, nonviolent action, by land, sea and across borders, working to end Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza, confront the complicity that enables occupation and stand with the Palestinian people. From ships at sea and coordinated mobilisations, to overland convoys crossing continents, each act of resistance represents everyday people’s refusal to remain silent and a collective commitment to Palestinian liberation.

Big Pharma’s nieuwe goudmijn

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Wednesday, June 24 at 07:30 PM GMT+2

Wie profiteert er van de nieuwe drugseconomie?

We denken anders over drugs.

Resilience Food Stories

Pakhuis de Zwijger, Friday, June 19 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

Thirteen years Taksim Square Uprising, movie night: Times of the Marauders (Cem Uğur, Kenan Ağbulut, Ghetto Cinema Collective, 2014)

Joe's Garage, Sunday, May 31 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

Times of the Marauders (2014, 58 minutes, english subtitles). Dir.: Cem Uğur, Kenan Ağbulut (Ghetto Cinema Collective). Door opens at 20:00, presentation and film start at 20:30. Free entrance.

This mid-length documentary, composed of footage shot by Cem Uğur, Emrah İlingi, and İmran Aydın who work at Etkin News Agency begins with the first moments of resistance at Gezi Park and concludes with a revolutionary lament for those who lost their lives during the resistance. We are gathering on May 31, 2026. Thirteen years ago, on May 31, Taksim Square was occupied and reclaimed by so-called “marauders” and “drunkards.” We knew how to drive the state’s fascist police forces out of the squares, but in doing so, a heavy price was paid. Salute to the people of Turkey and Kurdistan who took control of Taksim Square. In honor of the day we reclaimed the square, we invite you all to Joe’s Garage to discuss our Gezi Park Uprising.
A thousand greetings to those who fell and fought during the Gezi Park Uprising!
Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere is resistance!
Long live our Gezi Park Uprising!

Since June 2005, Joe's Garage is an autonomous squatted political social center, a meeting place in the Transvaal neighborhood for squatters and non-squatters, subsidy free, not for profit, self-organized and entirely run by volunteers.
