I saw this cute little guy at a stoplight this evening. Apparently it's the University of Michigan entry in the Great Solar Challenge.
The Aptera car is the world’s first 3-wheel “Never Charge” electric vehicle that is almost entirely powered by the sun and requires no electric charging. This allows drivers to drive longer distances without stopping for a charge or refill, and it also uses less power and emissions than any other car.
Solar cars are becoming the El Dorado for electric vehicles, offering a solution to charging our cars daily with solar power instead of relying on fossil fuels. Companies like Toyota, Mercedes, and Porsche have experimented with solar cars, using their own models to enhance the electric components. However, the autonomous driving range has not been impressive, with the longest distance covered, by the Mercedes Vision EQXX, only reaching less than 50 kilometers. The Energizer Bunny, or Tesla Model, is reportedly owned by a Reddit user who claims to have designed a foldable solar roof system that allows charging between 30 and 100 daily kilometers. In the project presentation, the user explains that the foldable solar panels are installed on the roof of the vehicle, with the panels opening up to approximately 27 centimeters above the car's body. In the new version, they will reportedly be able to reduce the height to only 15 centimeters. Overall, the Tesla Model could potentially save up to 4,000W in the future, as long as the user confirms. However, many questions remain, such as whether the solar panels are used to charge the battery directly or to transform the solar energy into electric energy to charge the vehicle while it's parked. The effectiveness of the entire system is being debated. In 2019, Toyota created a prototype Prius with a solar roof that generated 860W. However, due to regulations, Toyota was only able to place 75kg of solar panels on the car's roof, which would significantly affect the vehicle's aerodynamics. The creator of the Tesla Model estimates that the consumption would be improved by only 10%. Some critics argue that the car may not be able to travel more than 40 kilometers in real-world conditions due to the impact of the solar panels on the vehicle's aerodynamics and the discomfort of the ride caused by the noise generated.
