I understand this is a misconception in terms if frogs. We are tslking here however about how humans understand and grasp cliamte change. In this context, it seems to be a more effective term than #ShiftingBaseLineSyndrome to describe the fact that himans are incapable of grapsing the extent of change as they are constantly getting used to a new normal. Even if frogs in reality jump out.

@Stormwitch @otfrom that’s such an important point! Our “in the past/now” comparisons are hampered by our(collective and individual) memories being so short. #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome is something we have been discussing in #ClimateDiary a bit, too

Extremely high melt rates across the #Greenland ice sheet as visualised on @polarportal also illustrate #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome for #Glaciologists.

Even 10 years ago this would have been almost unprecedented, and 20 years ago virtually unthinkable.

Now it's just what happens in Greenland in July...

Attached: 3 images *extremely* high melt event ongoing in #Greenland right now. It's the peak of the melt season in July but even so this is a lot. Given the late heavy snowfalls this spring the total ice budget is still pretty average but in western Greenland the melt is burning through it fast... http://polarportal.dk/en/greenland/surface-conditions/

Yes, inevitable given current conditions but also pretty shocking that there are #Wildfires in #Scotland in #June. You do worry that this might become “normal” all too soon, and that we forget how things used to be (always changing of course but still). #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome #ClimateDiary #Daviot

Why do we accept these obscene levels of #Inequality in the #UK? #Foodbank demand soaring and soaring; families who only have £4 per week for #Food; better paid #NHS staff routinely bringing in food so that their colleagues can make it through the day. Meanwhile more #Billionaires and wealth at the top than ever. Yet all “normal” by now. We have #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome not just with #ClimateChange but also inequality

Shifting Baseline Syndrome is a gradual change in the accepted norms for the condition of the environment due to a lack of knowledge of its past condition.

@Guy yes! I’ve gone through all this so much too since starting #ClimateDiary - realising just how completely unobservant i’ve been most of my life about all this. Many others too - an ongoing theme. But have learned a lot from others- #Phenology #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome etc
@outi “people live so much in the moment and don’t really remember the past”. that is so, so true. And we don’t now have a “deep history” culture that could compensate for that; modernity so much about the present. This matters so much with regard to the #ClimateCrisis - and as you say, #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome
is one aspect of that
