Extremely high melt rates across the #Greenland ice sheet as visualised on @polarportal also illustrate #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome for #Glaciologists.
Even 10 years ago this would have been almost unprecedented, and 20 years ago virtually unthinkable.
Now it's just what happens in Greenland in July...

*extremely* high melt event ongoing in #Greenland right now. It's the peak of the melt season in July but even so this is a lot.
Given the late heavy snowfalls this spring the total ice budget is still pretty average but in western Greenland the melt is burning through it fast...

Austrian scientists race to reveal melting glaciers' secrets
Jumping from rock to rock to rock over a creek formed off Austria's Jamtal glacier, scientist Andrea Fischer worries that precious scientific data will be irreversibly lost as the snow and ice melt faster than ever.
France 24So, #Frostodon is a thing...
It brings joy to a #glaciologists heart - here are some #FrostFlowers, formed in an #Arctic #SeaIce lead
Incredibly beautiful #Ice crystals and surprisingly salty tasting...
Inspired by a piece I wrote for
@envhistnow earlier in the year, I'm starting to work on something new & wanted to see if there were any
#glaciologists out there who might be willing to chat specifically about crevasses, historical geological surveys of
#Greenland, and/or east Greenland's
#glaciers?

Galvanizing Glaciology: Thoughts on an Ecocritical Art History
Glaciers are marked by the contours of time. Flow lines and lateral moraines (ridges of accumulated dirt and rocks) demarcate the movement of ice with traces of debris incised into the glacier’s ic…
