I just realized why this piece of advice about first drafts doesn't work for me. It's given by writers who've been through more first drafts than I've ever attempted. They simply can't create the mistakes I'm still capable of. They say: "Just write the first draft, don't overthink it", but if I do, I might never untangle the result.
