You're right that it's manpower-intensive - occupying any significant fraction of Venezuela to protect oil infrastructure will stretch the army incredibly thin, considering all the other "missions" the US military is still expected to maintain.
Even with billions of US tax dollars being funnelled to the private paramilitary contractors, I expect this will end up with significant callups of National Guard to find enough bodies to do the work. And if that isn't enough, the administration isn't above re-instating the draft to keep the oil money going to the oligarchs.
Would a renewed draft be enough to get the US population out into the streets? Maybe?
