[As a US naturalized citizen, ‘Travels with Charley’ is one of my favourite travel/Americana books (just behind Least Heat Moon’s ‘Blue Highways’), storytelling supreme, especially with Steinbeck’s personal situation at the time; this building on that exploration and observation - including ‘Log from the Sea of Cortez’ - is truly a joy to see]

Diving with Sea Lions at Los Islotes, La Paz Mexico

In the turquoise waters off La Paz, Mexico, encounters with sea lions are part of what makes diving in the Sea of Cortez so unforgettable. During a 2016 dive at Los Islotes, I experienced one of those moments that remind you how spontaneous and alive the ocean can be.

I was filming a tiny subject near the sea lion pinnacle when my concentration was broken by a gentle pull on my tank. This wasn’t another diver; it was a curious California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), who immediately began playfully circling me.

The sea lion twisted, darted, and spun with effortless grace. It inspected my gear, blew a few bubbles, and reminded me that curiosity underwater works both ways. Encounters like this highlight the unique bond between divers and marine life—one that’s built on respect, awe, and a bit of humor.

These California sea lions are known for their intelligence and playfulness, especially around the colonies of Los Islotes, where divers and snorkelers can often interact with them under the guidance of local dive operators.

📊 Dive Details

🎥 Filmed: 2016 📍 Location: Los Islotes, La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico 🐾 Species: California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) 🌊 Environment: Shallow reef and rock formations in the Sea of Cortez 🌡️ Best Season: October through May (optimal visibility) 💧 Typical Depth: 15-50 feet (5-15 meters)

Located just north of Espíritu Santo Island, Los Islotes is one of the top dive sites in Baja California Sur. The site is home to a large colony of California sea lions, coral-encrusted rocks, and schools of tropical fish including king angelfish, surgeonfish, and occasional manta rays.

Conditions are generally calm, with excellent visibility from October through May, making it ideal for underwater photographers and videographers alike. The protected waters and abundant marine life create perfect conditions for both novice and experienced divers.

For divers seeking a mix of wildlife interaction and cinematic scenery, few places in the world compare to diving La Paz.

💡 Tips for Diving with Sea Lions

  • Let them approach you—never chase or corner them
  • Keep your hands close to your body to avoid accidental contact
  • Respect their space, especially during pupping season (June-August)
  • Use a local dive operator familiar with sea lion behavior
  • Bring a GoPro or action camera—they love the camera!

This is why I dive — the unplanned moments when the ocean just is, and a curious sea lion (or anything wild) decides I’m worth investigating. That’s the magic.

If you’re planning a trip to La Paz, don’t miss the chance to dive Los Islotes. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you surface.
