What if scientists could collect snot by somehow flying over the whale? Researchers can glean much information from whale snot, including DNA sequence, its sex, whether it is pregnant, and its microbiome.
After many experiments, Kerr’s idea turned into what is known as #SnotBot: a drone fitted with 6 petri dishes that collect a whale’s snot by flying over as it surfaces and exhales through its blowhole.

July 22, House #NaturalResources #subcommittee, GOP Rep. #NickBegich (AK) introduced draft legislation that would scale back #MarineMammal Protection Act. Among other things, it would limit ability of #US gov to take action against “incidental take,” killing of whales, #dolphins and #seals by sonic blasts from #oil exploration, ship and boat strikes or by drowning as accidental catch (#bycatch) in #fishing gear.

#KillerWhales have been filmed making and then using what is thought to be the #cetacean equivalent of a pumice stone. Reported in Current Biology, this is the first time that a #marinemammal has been seen creating a grooming-related tool and then using it with another individual.
