I think this is a sawfly rather than a caterpillar - but I'll need a someone who is good with bugs or is their Doctor (an entomologist) to confirm! This little one was propelling down a tree. I'll post a further away picture down below in the comments! ✨
(By the way, this may be bug week because I took a lot of pictures of bugs)

03/09/2025 - Finally the rain stopped for the day so we headed out for an evening stroll to the bottle bank and shop. I stopped to look at the young birch trees growing by the side of the road. A very big green caterpillar caught my eye. What butterfly or moth is this going to be I thought. Turns out none as it's the larvae of a birch sawfly, Britain's largest sawfly. Nice find and a new bug for me. I like bugs.

#Entomology #insect people - whose baby is this? My first thought was a sawfly but I'm really not sure. An odd lepidoptera caterpillar? A hover fly larva? Other? Manitoba, Canada. Today.

Rose sawfly larvae, (Arge pagana I think). The one furthest left looks very happy 🙂
