The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking a Human Factors Intern (Transportation Planning Technician 1) to support the Highway Safety Program as part of a team of safety professionals working to integrate human factors understanding into human-centered design principles. WSDOT is working to integrate the Safe System Approach into Washington State practices and procedures. This position will work with staff from Transportation Safety and Systems Analysis Division and the Active Transportation Division on small-scale, short-term projects and research activities related to human factors, road user interaction and the Safe System Approach. Outcomes and products will be conveyed in writing, graphical representations, PowerPoint presentations, and research papers as appropriate to the information and audience. What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Human Factors Intern will:Work with Statewide experts to develop materials and content into safety practices and procedures by using human factors understanding to develop products. Assist in the communication with engineers and planners to increase human factors understanding. Assist other staff in identifying and communicating opportunities for change in policies, procedures, and programs that will create a more equitable and safe road system for all transportation system users.Develop human-centered practices, work plans and content for consideration in WSDOT Safety and Active Transportation programs, including the collection of data and literature, analyses of data, collation of literature on human centered design and operational practices. Prepare reports, technical memorandum, briefings, and presentations on deliverables.Participate in meetings, conferences, and other events. QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:Must be involved in a college institution or recent graduate and have taken courses in cognitive psychology and/or human factors.It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:Possess strong technical skills with the capability to learn and use a variety of software such as MS Office and various online databases to analyze data and produce reports and graphics. Fully understand basic research methods and procedures. Demonstrated ability to interpret images to report data. A valid driver’s license with the ability to drive to meetings as necessary. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.This is an intern position, non-permanent and anticipated to last 3-6 months.The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 4%, effective on July 1, 2023.In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
