From the #pinephone after being a lil disappointed in ubports approach... Not saying it's bad, just wasn't for me ... And the #sxmo project
Ever had a hard time to setup the correct APN settings on your #sxmo #pmos driven #linuxmobile ?
not anymore, there is an Apn Helper in #sxmop6 to help you finding the correct settings.
I do not yet see a mention of #Mobian or #PostmarketOS on this thread... but at the OS level it is basically there....
#Phosh (which is #Gnome based) and #KDE mobile are largely quite useable, as well as lightweight options such as #SXMO provide a working mobile "desktop" experience.
I use Mobian every day to communicate with folks using #DinoIM (an #XMPP client) and through that have an SMS gateway.
The gap, is the ability to get the functionality of arbitrary android apps...
With Google locking down Android are there any viable mobile OSs, not based on Android, usable as a daily driver besides #SailfishOS?
I haven't used any of the other mobile Linux OSs besides #Sxmo for a short while.
And "viable" is of course very subjective but minimally one should be able to make and receive calls without any issues, SMS, mobile data up to 5G and VoLTE, run a Signal client¹ and browser.
¹ @Mer__edith please start working on a client for Linux phones (talk with @rubdos)
The past week, masked as a link list: One more core Sailfish app being open-sourced, postmarketOS asking for feedback on upstream first development, iOS 14 in QEMU on a Linux phone, help find and fix Lomiri bugs, and ... nothing about KDE Akademy, yet. Enjoy!
Today I got a good idea for accessibility on Linux phones: using the SXMO gesture program to control a screen reader (and magnifier). That's what I'll be doing when I get around to it. Screen reader integration will probably be easier. This is inspired by how Narrator was controlled on Windows Phone, naturally.
