Earth's low orbit is becoming cluttered with high-velocity space junk

Thousands of satellites are being launched into space at low Earth orbit, joining hundreds of thousands of pieces of space junk, and it's becoming a real problem.

Space Development Agency (SDA) cops to issues with scaling its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). The agency is grappling with a 2-3 month schedule slip. Core issues include:

Satellite Contact Failures: SDA and its vendors have struggled with the on-orbit checkout process – aka an inability to establish contact with one of its satellites launched in late 2025.

Component Scarcity: Sustained shortages of optical communications terminals (OCTs) and encryption devices continue to serve as the “critical path” for all vendors.

Launch Schedule Pressure: The next scheduled mission, T1TL-A, is ~ 4 months behind schedule due to the 45-day government shutdown, a launch rocket tech glitz, and issues with onboard software for satellites. https://satnews.com/2026/03/08/space-development-agency-faces-growing-pains-as-pwsa-scaling-hits-chokepoints/

Can you say giant S_IT SHOW!

Turmoil resulting from "seismic shifts in NASA Management and in the Federal government has caused "sweeping workforce losses and operational instability throughout 2025", and has led to the cancellation of one of NASA's most important upcoming astrophysics missions to launch a next generation x-ray telescope.

The project has lost more than 20 personnel with key expertise as a result of NASA's Deferred Resignation Program and endless management reorganizations to "align" with the 2026 presidential budget request. https://www.space.com/space-exploration/missions/nasa-project-leader-blames-next-generation-x-ray-telescope-cancellation-on-agency-mismanagement #NASA #Mismanagement #USGov #BudgetCuts #AXIA #Space #SpaceCraft #XRayTelescope #Astrophysics #Fail #ShitShow

Heads up! Satellite incoming!

Originally predicted to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in 2034, the U.S. Space Force (USSF) confirmed that the Van Allen Probe A spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere over the eastern Pacific Ocean region at 6:37 am. EDT on Wed, Mar 11.

NASA expected most of the spacecraft to burn up as it traveled through the atmosphere, but some components may have survived re-entry.

Scientists confirmed the sun had reached its solar maximum, triggering intense space weather events which increased atmospheric drag on the spacecraft beyond initial estimates, resulting in the early re-entry. https://www.nasa.gov/missions/van-allen-probes/nasa-van-allen-probe-a-to-re-enter-atmosphere/ #NASA #USSF #VanAllenProbe #Space #SpaceCraft #Re-Entry #Satellite #EarthOrbit #Sun #spaceWeather #Atmosphere

Oh I'm sure it'd take the mother of all tinted windows to stop it from blinding you, but imagine being on a solar sail, making a fly-by to gain speed to your final destination, and then seeing *this* out your window. The ultimate scenic route, in my own painting, "Reach for the light".

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A Expected to Re-Enter Earth’s Atmosphere

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A, a 1,300-pound (600 kg) spacecraft launched in 2012 to study Earth’s radiation belts, is scheduled to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere this week. The probe’s descent is mostly…
