After 48 years, 9 months, 12 days, 23 hours, and 35 minutes, Voyager 1 is approximately 26.1 billion km (16.2 billion miles) from the Earth.

That's 174.597 au or, at the speed of light, 24h 12m 04s.

From the Sun, Voyager 1 is approximately 25.6 billion km (15.9 billion miles or 170.969 au.)

Velocity relative to the Earth is about 39 km/sec (~87,916 mph); to the Sun about 16 km/sec (~37,782 mph.)

Voyager 1 has no thoughts today.

In November Voyager 1 will reach one light-day from Earth. Nothing made by humans has ever gone that far. (Mark your calendars!)

Look at it another way: I was in high school when Voyager 1 launched and now I'm retired. But V-ger is still working.

In November 2026, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft will cross a milestone no human-made object has ever reached — the point at which a radio signal traveling at the speed of light takes a full 24 hours to arrive — meaning the engineers on Earth who say "good morning, Voyager" on a Monday will not hear its response until Wednesday, in a probe still operating roughly 49 years after it launched from Cape Canaveral in 1977

Voyager 1 is, by every available measure, the longest-running and most successful piece of deep-space hardware in the history of the species. It launched at 8:56 AM Eastern Daylight Time on 5 September 1977, atop a Titan IIIE-Centaur rocket from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, on what was originally planned as […]
