La scelta da parte di Vladimir Putin di indicare come negoziatore il tedesco Schroder non è stata apprezzata dall'Unione europea. Oltre al ministro degli Esteri, Antonio Tajani, che ha rivendicato l'autonomia negoziale europea, anche l'Alto rappresentante Ue per la politica estera Kaja Kallas ha commentato il fatto: "Se dessimo alla Russia il diritto di nominare un negoziatore per nostro conto, non sarebbe molto saggio". Niente veti o imposizioni, dunque, ma massima autonomia. Per Kallas, il profilo del tedesco Gerhard Schroder non è affatto opportuno. "Credo sia stato un lobbista di alto livello per le aziende statali russe - ha detto - Quindi è chiaro perché Putin voglia che sia lui a occuparsi di questo caso, in modo che possa sedere da entrambe le parti del tavolo".
In effetti, la figura di Schroder è piuttosto controversa e i rapporti col Cremlino non sono nuovi alle cronache. Il 9 dicembre 2006, due settimana dopo aver lasciato l'incarico di cancelliere, Putin gli aveva offerto di guidare il comitato degli azionisti di Nord Stream, la società russa incaricata di costruire il primo gasdotto sottomarino che collegava i due paesi. Schroder ha poi fatto parte di Rosfneft e società energetiche collegate a Gazprom, e lo stesso New York Times lo aveva ribattezzato "l'ex cancelliere che diventò l'uomo di Putin in Germania".
Il cancelliere si è schierato contro l'embargo energetico russo, definendo poi la guerra in Ucraina "un errore". La sua indicazione da parte di Putin non è quindi piaciuta all'Unione europea, che oggi ha ribadito la propria indipendenza nel decidere congiuntamente il profilo migliore per gestire i colloqui con Mosca.

Vladimir Putin’s decision to designate the German Schröder as negotiator was not appreciated by the European Union. In addition to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who claimed the European Union’s negotiating autonomy, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas also commented on the matter: “If we were to give Russia the right to appoint a negotiator on our behalf, it would not be very wise.” There would be no vetoes or impositions, but maximum autonomy. For Kallas, the profile of the German Gerhard Schröder is not at all appropriate. “I believe he was a top lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies – he said – Therefore it is clear why Putin wants him to deal with this case so that he can sit on both sides of the table.”
Indeed, Schröder’s figure is quite controversial and relations with the Kremlin are not new to the headlines. On December 9, 2006, two weeks after leaving his position as Chancellor, Putin offered him to lead the shareholder committee of Nord Stream, the Russian company responsible for building the first underwater pipeline connecting the two countries. Schröder then became part of Rosfneft and energy companies linked to Gazprom, and the same New York Times had renamed him “the former chancellor who became Putin’s man in Germany.”
The Chancellor had taken a stand against the Russian energy embargo, later defining the war in Ukraine as “a mistake.” His designation by Putin was therefore not liked by the European Union, which today reaffirmed its independence in jointly determining the best profile to manage talks with Moscow.
