Duro scambio di battute, ieri al vertice dei ministri del G7, tra l’Alto rappresentante Ue Kaja Kallas e il segretario di Stato Usa Marco Rubio, riporta il sito di news Usa Axios. Kallas ha fatto notare che Rubio, nello stesso forum un anno prima, aveva affermato che se Mosca avesse ostacolato gli sforzi Usa per porre fine alla guerra, gli Usa avrebbero perso la pazienza e avrebbero preso ulteriori misure contro il Cremlino. “Dopo un anno la Russia non si è mossa. Quando finirà la sua pazienza?”, ha chiesto Kallas. “Stiamo facendo del nostro meglio. Se pensate di poter fare di meglio, fate pure. Noi ci faremo da parte”, la spazientita risposta di Rubio.
Rubio ha affermato che gli Stati Uniti stavano cercando di dialogare con entrambe le parti, ma che stanno aiutando solo una di esse, l’Ucraina, fornendo armi, informazioni di intelligence e altro supporto. Dopo l’acceso scambio di battute, diversi ministri europei presenti nella stanza sono intervenuti per ribadire la loro volontà che gli Stati Uniti continuino a perseguire la via diplomatica tra Russia e Ucraina, ha riferito una fonte.
Secondo due fonti di Axios, al termine dell’incontro Rubio e Kallas si sarebbero appartati brevemente per cercare di stemperare gli animi. Ma il teso scambio di battute, avvenuto alla presenza dei ministri degli esteri degli alleati, è stato sintomatico della reciproca diffidenza tra gli Stati Uniti e molti dei loro alleati europei a causa della guerra in Ucraina.

A heated exchange of words took place yesterday at the G7 ministerial summit between EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to US news site Axios. Kallas noted that Rubio, in the same forum a year earlier, had stated that if Moscow hindered US efforts to end the war, the US would lose patience and take further measures against the Kremlin. “After a year, has Russia moved? When will your patience run out?” Kallas asked. “We are doing our best. If you think you can do better, go ahead. We will step aside,” the exasperated response of Rubio.
Rubio stated that the United States was seeking to engage in dialogue with both sides, but that it was only helping one of them, Ukraine, by providing weapons, intelligence information, and other support. Following the heated exchange of words, several European ministers present in the room intervened to reiterate their desire that the United States continue to pursue a diplomatic path between Russia and Ukraine, a source reported.
According to two sources from Axios, at the end of the meeting Rubio and Kallas briefly separated to try to cool things down.
