@paul @linus @stefano @whynothugo I chose Ubuntu (for KDE Plasma) because the installer provides root-on-ZFS.

With that base, I have not yet figured out which of these will be the simplest way forward:

― bemgr
― zectl
― ZFSBootMenu.

<https://gist.github.com/grahamperrin/a65f5d819a6a8c54aff6079f63db33f6#user-content-management-of-zfs-boot-environments>

I see verbose guides, the verbosity creates a sense of complication.

I'd like the simplest possible guide to getting started, with any of the three options, where the boot environment layout/structure is predetermined by the installer for Ubuntu.

TIA

I was so fond of #ZFS after my (somewhat unlucky) experience with #FreeBSD that I actually tried #RootOnZFS on #Alpine Linux last night. Took me some errors and tries but I did. Miss the integration with #FreeBSD installer though. This time #S3 suspend and resume worked like a charm almost out of box, which I thought was expected for #Linux . 1/2

@DrHyde Issue with #FreeBSD installation, via "bsdinstall" menus, of #rootOnZFS is that no option is presented either to use GPT labels or "disk-id" paths. That pool usage remains with dancing device names.

I have not tried enabling/using "disk-id" paths to see if that would change the name of devices for the root pool.

@c0nsid3rate I'm relatively new, coming up on four years. Galago Pro 5 owner, running Pop! there and on an HP Z840, both with #RootOnZFS #zfsBootMenu.

@jamesthebard Backups FTW! 👍

I recently discovered that when I created pools for root on ZFS for my homelab file server, I accidentally left off the 'mirror' keyword and was operating with a 2 drive stripe set instead of mirrors for bpool and rpool. 😬 But I've reinstalled for other reasons and have even purchased a new SSD to mirror the existing (no redundancy) install. But I've already proven my backups value to perform the installation.

@tommythorn @udob @cd0 I run Pop! (an Ubuntu derivative that does away with some Ubuntu nonsense) and I recently migrated my laptop to #RootOnZFS and #ZFSBootMenu. Here's a rough guide https://gist.github.com/curiousercreative/80b00df57d3fbe1107a524f4e59cf4b5

If you had updated the #BIOS, how did you do that? Did you need to restore the #EFI configuration somehow?
