Astronomers Discover Gigantic Iron Bar Running Through Ring Nebula

'We definitely need to know more.'

Look up to the sky...
There it is, the M57, also known as the Ring Nebula. A planetary nebula about 2,000 light-years away, quietly glowing in the constellation Lyra.
After a couple of nights out with the telescope, battling focus, clouds, and expectations, this photo is far from perfect — but it's real. A tiny ring of gas, the remains of a dying star, floating in the void.

Still... “The Ring – One Nebula to rule them all!”

Last observation of this morning is the #M57 - #RingNebula. Just a 21 minute observation this morning. Sharing telescope processed and unprocessed images. #unistellar #odysseypro #space #astronomy #amateur

Last observation of the morning. Observed the #M57 - #RingNebula. Sharing 2 images. The first is the ring nebula processed by the onboard software second image is the non-processed image. Both images are 28 minute exposure. I do like the processed images as they do focus on the target, but sometimes you seem to sacrifice highlights of the object. #unistellar #odysseypro #space #astronomy #amateur
Before I collected the last data of the Elephant's Trunk this month, I slewed to the Ring Nebula before it got fully dark out and imaged it for 17 minutes with the L-eNhance filter. It was considerably smaller than I thought it was going to be at 700mm of focal length, but BlurXTerminator and the 1.1"/pixel resolution came in clutch and allowed me to crop the image substantially to reveal the Ring up close.

34x30s lights (17 minutes), flats, biases stacked and edited in PixInsight.

@davehigginsnaples Here is a zoom-in of a picture I took containing M57 (Ring Nebula) with my telescope. Tracking was off a little as you can see, but there is a central star visible inside the ring -- I convinced myself from looking at other pictures from larger telescopes that this was the stellar remnant. Picture taken on 10 September 2014, and has been brightness and contrast enhanced to bring out the detail.
