Behind every deep sky image is a story. Discover the gear and passion that drive Astrocamp - from capturing distant galaxies to glowing nebulae and sparkling star clusters. Meet the astronomer chasing the night sky one frame at a time.

I just had a foto session with my daughter and already used some results on my about page.

The Eagle Nebula, also known as Messier 16, is a magnificent star-forming region nestled in the constellation Serpens. Located 5,370 light-years from Earth, this open cluster and nebula complex is home to the famous Pillars of Creation. Best observed in late June when it culminates around astronomical midnight, the Eagle Nebula offers a breathtaking glimpse into stellar birth.

The Dumbbell Nebula
================

A dying Sun-like star, roughly 1,200–1,360 light-years away, has shed its outer layers into space. What remains is this delicate glowing shell of gas, shaped by the final stages of stellar evolution.

I chose to keep the wider field around the nebula instead of cropping in too tightly. Against the dense star field of the Milky Way, M27 appears almost fragile — even though the nebula spans several light-years across.

M27 - dumbell nebula
This sphere of ionised (electrically excited) gas is expanding at a rate of 31kms per second after the collapse of the parent star about 14,500 years ago. It has collapsed to a white dwarf star whose radiation is illuminating the gas by ionisation.

Our sun will probably follow a similar path in 5 or 6 billion years, since it's not big enough to collapse into a black hole.

M27 dumbell nebula is around 1360 light years away in the constellation Vulpecula (fox). It was the first planetary nebula discovered, by Charles Messier in 1764.

Messier 92 glows in the constellation Hercules, a compact globular cluster containing hundreds of thousands of ancient stars bound together by gravity. Located approximately 27,000 light-years from Earth, this celestial gem reaches its peak visibility during early June nights when it culminates at astronomical midnight.

Messier 13, known as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, is a spectacular sphere of hundreds of thousands of ancient stars bound together by gravity. Located 22,000 to 25,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Hercules, it ranks among the brightest and most magnificent globular clusters visible from northern skies, reaching its peak visibility in early June.
