NGC 7023 - The Iris Nebula. A dark reflection nebula in the Constellation Cepheus. This pale blue reflection nebula is named after the Iris flower, which it resembles. It is illuminated from within by a few bright stars giving it an eerie glow.

STAR PARTY CHAOS

1 Night at a Star Party… BEST NIGHT EVER

one night. that’s all it took

rocked up to the Messier Star Party thinking it’d be a chill night looking at stars… yeah nah

ended up interviewing Norm about a planispheric astrolabe he literally designed and built, Hugh with his home-built 6" RC, and Phil from the radio astronomy crew about what they’re doing with the dish out at LMDSS

ran Messier Bingo, gave away prizes, pointed telescopes at the Sun, then spent the rest of the night imaging under stupidly good skies

and somewhere in between all that… just hung out with a bunch of legends I haven’t seen in ages

one night, way too much fun, zero regrets

🔭 Hobby update! Polaris & NGC 188

Polaris: the North Star.

For centuries, the fixed point in the sky used for navigation. Reliable, constant… almost boring, until you look a bit deeper.

In the same field lies NGC 188, one of the oldest known open clusters in our galaxy (~6–7 billion years old), quietly orbiting the Milky Way while Polaris guided travelers on Earth.

But what makes this region really challenging is something far more subtle: IFN (Integrated Flux Nebula). The dust part.

This faint, dusty structure is not illuminated by nearby stars, but by the combined light of the entire Milky Way. It’s extremely dim, easily drowned by light pollution, and requires careful processing to even reveal.

A guiding star, an ancient cluster… and barely visible interstellar dust connecting it all. Insane, isn’t it?

Technically one of the more challenging fields I’ve captured; not because of complexity, but because of how little signal there actually is. And ok; framing and alinging, and keeping track is … complicated, if you know. You know. Aligning on Polaris is like aiming at a coin from tens of kilometers away; we do that before every shoot.

But there’s always more in the frame; if you push the data far enough and keep track on an asset that basically doesn’t move. 😬

The Leo Triplet - three spiral galaxies 35 million light-years away in Leo.

NGC 3628 appears perfectly edge-on, its dust lane and warped disk shaped by billions of years of tidal interaction. M65 and M66 complete the trio with asymmetric arms and disrupted structure.

The Leo Triplet
===========

The Leo Triplet - one of the spring sky's most iconic galaxy groups, some 35 million light-years away in Leo.

Three spiral galaxies in a single field of view: NGC 3628, the Hamburger Galaxy, seen perfectly edge-on with its striking dust lane and tidally warped disk. M65 with well-defined spiral arms and a bright core. M66, the brightest member, showing asymmetric arms distorted by billions of years of gravitational interaction.
