Western astronomers unveil stunning new image of cosmic ‘buckyball’ origins
Western University researchers have released a striking new image of the planetary nebula Tc 1, offering fresh insight into the cosmic origins of "buckyballs," spherical carbon molecules first detected in space by the same team 15 years ago.

Happy Space Science Saturday! This glowing orb of gas, officially known as NGC 7662, is a planetary nebula formed when a Sun-like star shed its outer layers near the end of its life. The intense blue colour comes from ionized oxygen glowing under ultraviolet radiation from the hot stellar core left behind.
Located ~5,600 light-years away in the constellation Andromeda, this compact nebula is a favourite target for both professional and amateur astronomers.

The very faint planetary nebula, known as Abell 7, is about 1,800 light-years from Earth. It is located just south of Orion toward the constellation Lepus, The Hare. Posing against the Milky Way stars, its simple spherical shape about 8 light-years in diameter is revealed in this deep telescopic image.
