New blog post!
I am back at astrophotography, and this time I can do it from my house, no need to freeze myself in the field. And so I was able to do the longest acquisition time ever for me, almost seven hours.
Spring is here so the target of choice was galaxies, but I only have a relatively wide angle lens, so I went with the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
Editing was done in Pixinsight and GIMP, and I am wondering, how many people use Pixinsight here? What are your typical processing pipelines? Maybe we could exchange notes, I am a noob at Pix and would love to see how you edit your photos.
Anyway, I am attaching a teaser trailer here, full pic in the blog post:
Today I've been integrating 270 exposures, 90s seconds each, for a total of 6h 45m, with darks, biases and flats.
First time, an hour in, there was a temporary power loss and I had to start from the beginning.
Second time, hour and a half in, Pixinsight process was killed because it used up the whole RAM and swap, and I had to start from the beginning.
I raised swap from 512MB to 64GB, and finally, the third time worked, it took more than two hours for WBPP to finish.
Woaaah - Pixinsight just released an astro-image on their site containing the trail of the Artemis mission visible in a deep sky image. How cool is that?!

PixInsight just added an awesome new step for rejecting frames during the stacking process! This has been something I wanted for a long time, so I'm excited to see it. My current intake process will filter out obvious things like clouds, but Frame Selection exposed a potential issue with my frames shot during the full moon. Sweet!
