The Disabled Hiker’s Guide to Northern California: Outdoor Adventures Accessible by Car, Wheelchair, and on Foot covers the northern region of California from approximately Santa Cruz/Monterey to the Oregon state line. This guide includes: Drive-up Adventures: Places that can be reached via car or accessible transportation that offer sweeping views or beautiful surroundings without having to go out on trail. Where trails that meet the guidelines are also available, they will be referenced and a trail guide provided. Wheelchair-Accessible Trails: Descriptions of verified wheelchair accessible trails. Trails will be reviewed for adherence to accessibility guidelines and inaccessible features will be noted (this is a fairly common occurrence). Descriptions of trail surface, grade, and detailed directions will also be provided. Wheelchair users need more information than simply listing whether a trail is “wheelchair accessible” or not. Hiking Trails: Listings will include trails with varying difficulty levels. The majority of trails will be in locations associated with developed recreations areas. There will also be options for backcountry or wilderness area hikes as lesser-known trails. About the AuthorSyren Nagakyrie (they/them) is the founder of Disabled Hikers, an organization by disabled people for disabled people. Syren writes trail guides, leads group hikes, and offers presentations throughout the Pacific Northwest and farther afield. Syren has consulted with many parks and organizations to improve access and inclusion for disabled people. They were selected as a Rooted in Rights Storyteller for 2019, a competitive program sponsored by Rooted in Rights and Disability Rights Washington. Syren is a lifelong social activist and advocate. As a freelance writer, Syren has been published in multiple anthologies, magazines, and blogs. They developed a love for nature in childhood but did not start exploring outdoor recreation until their mid-twenties; they faced exclusion and lack of accessibility in outdoor spaces, but Syren could not be held back from enjoying the wonders of nature. Through years of trial and error, Syren discovered what makes the outdoors accessible for them, and believes strongly in the importance of connection to place as an antidote to the isolation so many disabled people experience. They live in Forks, Washington.
Because I'm approaching the six-month expiration date for my semi-annual feet injections, concurrent with not being able to take my most effective medication for awhile, I'm starting to see a huge reduction in time I can stay on my feet, so I started an exercise program. I far prefer just being active.

They're the ittybittiest #exercises, but today I'm #sore in places I didn't know I had muscles, just because they're different #muscles than I use in daily activities.

Increasing evidence finds that reducing or eliminating meat from your diet and increasing plant-based foods -- especially certain types of #fiber, reduces inflammation and reduces symptoms from rheumatic diseases. Such as #rheumatoid #arthritis. Meat, on the other hand, increases inflammation. Fiber helps with the survival and proliferation of 'good' bacteria in the gut. This good bacteria reduces the amount of inflammation in the body. The less inflammation the better.
This reserach group in Amsterdam explains it pretty well on their website, and also encourage individualized exercise programs.
Research from Amsterdam UMC researchers, Dirkjan van Schaardenburg, Wendy Walrabenstein and Carlijn Wagenaar indicates that a plant-based diet may be just as effective as painkillers and anti-inflammatories in alleviating symptoms for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis.
A drug already used to alleviate some of the painful symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis might also be effective at stopping it from developing to begin with – potentially saving millions of people from this debilitating condition.

I've been in barely ♿️ #accessible towns and very accessible towns but so far, #LasVegas is the most fake-accessible I've been in. It's modern, it's beholden to the #ADA, it *should* be easy to use its sidewalks, but between all the pedestrian overpasses trying to feed us* through casinos instead of down the sidewalk and adding lots of distance, and the constant construction tearing up sidewalks, rarely marked before we headed down them, it's *barely* accessible. Quito, with its cobblestones and narrow sidewalks, was easier.
We're here for a family wedding, but won't be coming back as tourists.
*Us:
One nearly 13 multiply #neurodivergent person who is overwhelmed by some kinds of visual and auditory simulation. And yeah, shoulda grabbed ear protection, but it would have been too much regardless.
One 60 year old disabled by pain, deformities, and poor balance due to 2+ decades of medication-resistant #rheumatoid disease.
