This week's progress so far! I spent the last few days polishing my game jam VN from a few weeks ago.

- the UI is now fully customized
- the mini game is now more reactive and it gets progressively more difficult with each try
- also, I learned how to use Aseprite to make sprite variations and a new CG!

Code review: Items that change

@lordmatt

I’ve been coding up some tools to help storytelling in Ren’Py. This is a class (actually two) for items that change as they are used.

You may need to view the code on the original page to see nice formatting.

Python: Objects that change (for story reasons) - The Fantastic Site of Lord Matt

For my visual novel project, I wanted things that have images and tags, but can mutate or change as they gain more. This is the code I wrote: (Fediverse readers might find it looks nicer on the original page) I’m far from a seasoned Python game dev, which is why I am open to some […]

I feel dirty

I had to ask ChatGPT to help me install RenPy from source (the Ubuntu package is broken beyond measure), as I could not figure out how to get a nice icon on the dash rather than having to dig out some sh file each time.

It did work (with some tweaks to ChatGPT’s so-so directions).

Do I have to hand in my nerd card now?

We were discussing game dev on a Twitch stream I watch and how it feels and where our strengths and weaknesses are. I mentioned 3 engines and how they feel to me personally. Unity and Godot both feel like mixing oil and water to my brain. It's a struggle and the information doesn't stick. Meanwhile Ren'Py is one of the best documented easiest to understand for me. The tutorials are clear, I understand the API well. The people behind the docs are fantastic.
