Today in Labor History June 16, 1937: The Communist Party in Republican Spain outlawed the POUM, an anti-Stalinist Marxist party. Anyone associated with the POUM was rounded up and imprisoned. POUM cofounder Andreu Nin was arrested on this same date, and later tortured and assassinated at a Soviet-controlled camp. Nin was a teacher, journalist and organizer with the anarchist CNT union. He had been in Russia during the revolution there, and had served as secretary to Trotsky. His experiences in Russia motivated him to abandon anarchism for Marxism. He was forced leave Russia in 1930 for his opposition to Stalinism.
George Orwell fought with the POUM during the war against fascism. Ken Loach portrayed them in his seminal film “Tierra y Libertad.” Hemingway portrays them in his novel “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Victor Serge dedicated his book “Midnight in the Century” to Andreu Nin and other slain leaders of the POUM.
