The recently opened archives of Pope Pius XII are providing details about the scandal over the founder of the Legionaries of Christ. Entire books have already been written about the copious documentation that arrived in the Holy See starting in the 1950s proving its officials had evidence of the Rev. Marcial Maciel’s dubious morals, drug use, financial recklessness and sexual abuse of his young seminarians. The newly opened archives of the Pius papacy, which spanned 1939-1958, are adding to that. They confirm that Pius’ Vatican was cracking down on Maciel and was poised to take even tougher measures against him — including suspending him from priestly ministry — but that Pius’ 1958 death enabled Maciel’s supporters to take advantage of the leadership vacuum to salvage his name.

Der deutsche Jesuit & Widerstandskämpfer Lothar König schreibt im Dezember 1942 an den Privatsekretär von Papst Pius XII., er habe die Namen sämtlicher Verstorbenen Priester seit April 1942. Und weiter:
"Die letzten Angaben über 'Rawa Russka' (#Belzec) mit seinem SS-Hochofen, wo täglich bis zu 6000 Menschen, vor allem Polen und Juden umgelegt werden, habe ich erneut über andere Quellen bestätigt gefunden. Auch der Bericht über Oschwitz (#Auschwitz) bei Kattowitz stimmt."
Man wusste im Vatikan also zu diesem Zeitpunkt von Genozid und Massenmord der Nazis. Trotzdem schwieg der Papst öffentlich dazu - um die Priester im Herrschaftsbereich der Nazis und ihre Quellen zu schützen? Oder weil man sich mit den Nationalsozialisten arrangierte? Es bleibt umstritten.
Der Vatikan-Archivist Giovanni Coco, der den Brief unter den persönlichen Dokumenten Pius' XII gefunden hat, glaubt, der Papst hatte Angst, dass die Nazis Katholiken ähnlich verfolgen und ermorden würden.
