πŸš€ Welcome to the future where hoarding digital clutter is the new black! πŸ€– #Perkeep, where your 5TB cat videos are ushered into eternity, assuming you're tech-savvy enough to overcome the bugs and unfinished features. 🐞 It's like a time capsule, but without the nostalgia, and with more #debugging. πŸ’ΎπŸ”§

Perkeep
"Perkeep (nΓ©e Camlistore) is a set of open source formats, protocols, and software for modeling, storing, searching, sharing and synchronizing data in the post-PC era. Data may be files or objects, tweets or 5TB videos, and you can access it via a phone, browser or FUSE filesystem."

I have been trying to gravitate to a simple system for keeping organized "tagged" collections of photos/videos/documents backed up and lazily synchronized across multiple smartphones/laptops and a NAS of sorts on the home network. Off-the-shelf options (#GitAnnex, #Perkeep, #Epicyon, #PhotoChiotte, #Nextcloud/ #Owncloud, #Synology) all seem to only address parts of this common use-case.

@doctroid just wondering if you thought about #Perkeep nee #Camlistore ? https://perkeep.org interesting for its non-RDBMS approach and NAS packaging. I should do something like that Real Soon β„’

@mart_e I am not sure, but I think #Perkeep has access tokens for guest access.
I wish there was something like a "distributed" #Perkeep: a "#FileSystemForLife" that can store data in multiple vaults/volumes over multiple servers that can sync amongst them with each acting a bit like a git branch. When there's a sync conflict, each server (one of which might run on an end user laptop) prefers their own history of events but knows that of others such that users can better fix sync conflicts.
@icedquinn #HaikuOS claims to index such metadata. Also #PerKeep I believe.

Bruce Schneier is involved in #SOLID? Made me take a look. It sounds like #Hubzilla/ #Diaspora.

It doesn't talk about bringing advertisers' data to the client, which is the only way to ensure client data #privacy. Tim Berners Lee of proprietary encryption in standards fame is involved. I'd think of stopping at that.

#PerKeep is for data organizability, replicability and encryptability, doesn't involve renting it out, I think.

https://perkeep.org seems to do this (hashes used instead of filenames, storage backends retrieve data by its hash if it has it, local and remote backends available, multiple backends can be active, caching on top of backends). I like that it pays attention to metadata like #ID3, #TIFF, e-mail headers, etc. in an "indexing" layer.

(I talk about #PerKeep so much, I should commit to it for organizing my data)
