Alannah Acaq Hurley Awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for Her Work Against Pebble Mine

Alannah Acaq Hurley, executive director of the United Tribes of Bristol Bay, received the Goldman Environmental Prize for her work in fighting what would have become the largest open-pit mine in North America, known as Pebble Mine. This mine, proposed in 2001, was rejected in 2023 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to its high risk to the rich salmon fishery of Bristol Bay, located in Southeast Alaska. This year, the Department of Justice further supported the veto in court.

In an interview with Mongabay, Hurley discussed the long and winding path taken together with the coalition of the United Tribes of Bristol Bay to stop Pebble, also highlighting the challenges that await them as the battle moves to court and as UTBB seeks broader protections for the Bristol Bay watershed.
