A great black wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) feeding at and pollinating Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa).

Adults are pollinators but paralyze other insects with their venom and bring them to the nest for their larva to feed on.

Interestingly, they are victims of kleptoparasitism, in which birds observing them, often steal their prey.

After a morning collecting Japanese Beetles swarming on my Shrubby Cinquefoil, I find this 3 inch long American Pelecinid Wasp. This parasitic wasp lays its eggs directly into the grubs of beetles like the Japanese Beetle.

So if you see this in your yard welcome it. It definitely won't harm you, but it will harm June Beetles and the like.
