I am also advertising Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, the first book of the series, for the same price and a two book bundle for £19.99. You can also order the book through our Etsy shop, https://junagarhmedia.etsy.com.

The story

In Silent Spring, the second Busy Bee story and named after Rachel Carson’s famous book, the creatures of Old Oak Meadow start to fall ill. Bea and her friends must try to find out why. There seems to be some bad things going on in one of the farms next to the meadow. What are they and how do they stop what is making everyone sick?

This is one of Alice Wright’s wonderful illustrations that can be seen throughout the book.

@laguiri Also, speaking of #pollinator awareness, are you following @thebeeguy ? I learn so much about #bumblebees from him!

Well rats, Two of the squash plants have succumbed to squash mildew. Luckily, two of the plants are doing well, and two are iffy -- and I have about 6 more ready to plant. Focused on the #BumblebeeNest today. I put together one [of two] but I'll finish digging the hole tomorrow.

I had some mouse pee-soaked cardboard that I added to the nesting material. The original hose I wanted to use seemed too small, but it was to spec, so maybe I'll use that one instead. Building the "nest" out of chicken wire was interesting. My hand is a bit sore from all the wire cutting.

Edit: I think I'll go with the smaller tubing. This seems like it would attract mice...

A bumblebee visited my Lithodora this morning!

I didn't get any pictures because I was busy oohing over this comparatively massive bee visiting my tiny little blue flowers, but it made me happy to see. ^_^

The hairs on bumblebee tongues are merely hundreds of micrometers long.
Many closely spaced hairs create a myriad of tiny gaps that hold nectar by surface tension - a microscopic sponge trapping nectar on the tongue.

Finally got photographic evidence of Bombus californicus / California Bumblebee feeding in the great camas, just before the flowers finished for the year. Yay!

I think this is a male, because it is small and shaggy instead of huge and velvety like the one I saw before, but I do NOT know what i am talking about

I call a group of bumblebees or chonky carpenter bees a "squadron".

That's not official nomenclature, but it's more fun to me. 🐝

So big up to these pint-sized #bumblebees.

Short-lived and small but mighty!

And oh so vital.

Please pass this on.

Or should be.

Thank you folks.

They’re small mostly due to relying solely on the queen for food when developing.
They’re not a ‘type of bee” but smaller individuals of their species.
They only live as adults for a short time.
They help ensure that subsequent broods develop and are larger in size.
