Humans specialize in distraction, especially when the task at hand requires intellectual heavy lifting.

Why Your Couch is a Toxic Best Friend

Hey everyone, Tina here. Pull up a chair—or actually, maybe stand up for a second so we don’t get too settled.

I was scrolling through my feed the other day and saw a post that hit me like a splash of ice water to the face. It basically asked: “Are you actually tired, or are you just comfortable being stuck?” Ouch. I felt that in my soul, and honestly, in my lower back, probably because I’ve spent way too much time “thinking about my goals” while actually just melting into my sofa. It got me thinking about this weird phenomenon where grown adults—people with taxes, and bills, and real-life responsibilities—just kind of… stall. We call it “life being hard,” but if we’re being 100% real with ourselves, sometimes it’s just us being lazy and a little too cozy in our own mess.

The Reality of Staying Stuck

We’ve all been there. You have a vision of where you want to be. You see the “Future You” who wakes up at 6:00 AM, drinks green juice, has a thriving career, and actually knows where their social security card is kept.

But then there’s “Current You.” Current You is currently on episode four of a true-crime documentary, eating cereal out of a Tupperware bowl because all the clean dishes are in the sink, and wondering why “the man” is keeping you down.

We tell ourselves it’s a rough patch. We say, “I’m just waiting for the right opportunity.” But let’s be honest: opportunities don’t usually knock on your door when you’re hiding under a weighted blanket.

Why Being “Messy” is So Addictive

There is a strange comfort in staying stuck. When you’re stagnant, you don’t have to risk failing. You don’t have to deal with the discomfort of growth. Growth is itchy! Growth is sweaty! Growth requires you to stop looking at what the person next to you is doing and finally look at the disaster zone in your own backyard.

The Trap of the Compare and Despair Game

I used to be the queen of the “compare and despair” game. I’d spend hours looking at someone else’s Instagram, thinking, “Must be nice to have it all figured out,” while I hadn’t even updated my resume in three years. It’s so much easier to criticize someone else’s progress than it is to start your own.

The Danger of Depending on Others

Tina’s Truth Bomb: Depending on someone else to save you isn’t a life plan; it’s a movie plot. And honey, the credits are starting to roll.

How to Stop Being Comfortable and Start Being Productive

So, how do we stop being “comfortable” and start being productive? I’m still figuring it out, but here is what’s working for me:

  • Stop Waiting for a “Sign”: The sign is your bank account balance and that feeling of dread on Sunday nights. That’s your sign.
  • Get a Job (or a Better One): Discipline starts with showing up. It’s hard to build a dream life when you can’t pay for the electricity to see it.
  • Clean Your Physical Space: You can’t manifest a million dollars in a room that smells like old laundry. Trust me, I’ve tried.
  • Stop Worrying About the “Next Person”: Their journey is irrelevant. If they’re winning, cool. If they’re failing, also cool. Your focus should be on why you are still in the same spot you were twelve months ago.
  • Choosing Discomfort Over Stagnation

It sounds harsh, I know. But sometimes we need a little tough love. Life is hard—there’s no denying that. But there’s a massive difference between being exhausted from running toward a goal and being exhausted from sitting still and worrying.

One of those makes you stronger; the other just makes you stagnant.

So, let’s make a pact. This week, let’s choose the “itchy” discomfort of trying something new over the “cozy” feeling of staying stuck. Let’s get a little messy in the pursuit of fixing our lives instead of being messy just for the sake of it.
