@thzinc pretty near, but it's not a data logger!
The mcu is an #esp8266 (a D1 Mini clone), as you said it's connected via i2c to a #PN532 -based #NFC reader. The module to the right is not only an sdcard slot support. Is a " #DFPlayer ", a sketchy module containing an #MP3 player and amplifier, controllable via #UART. Pretty limited, but I needed someting cheap, quick and dirty, and it ticks all the boxes.
The idea is building an electronic storyteller (something like https://www.myfaba.it/ or https://lunii.com/ , but without the whole closed source stack, tracking and remote bricking they bring along) for my daughter.

Oooof I'm working on isolating a #PN532 bug in #ESPHome where it consumes all of the loop time but none of my test setups have replicated the bug overnight so I'm back to waiting..

The good news is I can temp resolve if the PN532 silently/soft fails by forcing a reboot if loop time is > 2k for 1 minute but that's not good enough.. I need to know how to replicate the bug & what is it the firmware/OS that's causing this sketchiness... It's on SPI and I2C too so two lots of firmware...

@janvlug @belastingdienst #libnfc was build to work with NFC chips and could also be used with e.g. #PN532 #arduino boards while #PCSC is the smartcard interface which also works with contact readers

Someone commented on one of my projects that the NXP PN532 is getting old, and there are newer chips. I found a later NXP one, but not sure it does what I want.

I like the HSU mode, as it allows it to run on a short run of wires that are properly driven (rather than the pull ups of I2C).

I like the GPIO as I use these for status LEDs on the reader.

Anyone know of a newer NFC chip that does HSU and has a few GPIO?

NFC Who’s at the Door

An early prototype that worked on the first try, except for one LED

[RevK] wanted to learn about NFC readers, and we agree that the best way to do so is to dive in and build one yourself.

There are readers available from multiple sources, but [RevK] found them either compact but with no prototyping space or plenty of prototyping space and a large footprint. HSU was selected over I2C for communication with an ESP32 as testing showed it was just as fast and more reliable over long distances at the cost of only one additional wire.

After a few versions, the resulting PN532 based NFC reader has just enough GPIO for a doorbell and tamper switch and three status LEDs, with board files and a 3D-printed case design included in the open source project on GitHub. When looking into the project, we appreciated learning about tamper switches that can include closed or open contact status when an NFC is read, most often used in the packaging of high-value and collectible products. If you have worked with this tamper feature of NFCs, let us know about it.

Thanks for the tip, [Simon]
