Re-purposing an old harddrive as a high speed turntable for ringing #microscopy slides, by swapping the disk controller board with my own #pic #microcontroller based spindle motor driver.
After designing the #pcb in #KiCAD I did a quick #3dprint to verify that my custom board would fit as a drop in replacement for the original driver board.
Like a glove 
One down; three to go.
I think it turned out alright? It will be a while before I can test it. Gotta get the SWD programmer situation sorted first.
Also, this board barely fits on my hot plate. Heat doesn't seem to spread very evenly. Had to use a hot air gun to heat components at both ends.
Why are these hall effect sensors so freaking small? Did I set myself up for failure by choosing these? 😆
It’s time to fix some hardware issues.
I’ll admit, I underestimated the heat dissipation a bit: when processing video streams intensively, my KVM starts to overheat. The passive cooling I was counting on just isn’t enough for such loads inside a closed case.
The solution is already on its way—I ordered active coolers that are only 4 mm tall. As soon as they arrive, I’ll install them and test how well they save the day. Small, but hopefully powerful.

We have just finished a first design of a prototype of a 3.3V buck converter voltage regulator. We plan to use this design as the final stage of a power input system from a battery, battery charger, and USB power input power stage to feed our pen-like haptic stylus product to allow a blind person to feel visual art.
