DHMosquitoNorth American Aviation P-51D Mustang. The P-51 was designed to meet a requirement from the American-based British Purchasing Commission during WW2. The BPC wanted North American to build Curtiss P-40s under licence, but North American said 'We can do better than that!' - and they did. However, it wasn't until the Mustang airframe was re-engined with the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin, that a star was born. Able to escort USAAF heavy bombers all the way to Berlin, it was a massive psychological blow to the Nazi regime.
