New research: bacteria hitchhiking on marine snow dissolve calcium carbonate — the mineral ballast that helps carbon sink to the deep ocean.

At certain sinking speeds, microbial acid production hits a sweet spot and the particles fall apart before reaching safe depths. Ocean carbon storage models may need updating.

The pathways that survive this scrutiny are worth scaling.

Marine CDR is one of the most promising — and least understood — removal pathways. The ocean already absorbs over 25% of human CO₂, but scaling that responsibly means understanding the ecology first.

The bipartisan ReSCUE Ocean Act would coordinate federal research across agencies before large-scale deployment. Science first, scale second.

The ocean already absorbs more than 1/4 of human-caused CO₂. But scaling marine carbon removal responsibly requires strong public research and oversight. The bipartisan ReSCUE Ocean Act would fund and coordinate that work across federal agencies. More: https://t.co/P5JssENuCf

Oyster farming as marine CDR? A new PNAS rebuttal paper says the science doesn't support it — shell calcification actually releases CO₂, and the original study's sedimentation claims relied on flawed carbon accounting.

This is exactly why CDR needs the "prove and learn" approach: every pathway must survive real MRV scrutiny before scaling.

Ocean oxygen impacts are the quiet concern in marine CDR. Glad to see @europeanmarineboard tackling this head-on — understanding mCDR side effects is non-negotiable before scaling.

Potential impacts of marine carbon dioxide removal on ocean oxygen

On Thursday 19 March 2026, EMB will host its 58th Third Thursday Science Webinar featuring Prof. Andreas Oschlies who will present on the topic of "Potential impacts of marine carbon dioxide removal on ocean oxygen".

Ocean covers 70% of Earth but ocean CDR gets a fraction of DAC funding. The ReSCUE Oceans Act is overdue — evidence first, deploy later.

Key: it funds field sites, not just models. We need real data on alkalinity enhancement and kelp permanence before scaling.

Studying oxygen impacts of marine CDR before scaling — exactly how this should work. The OAE field is doing something rare: building the safety case *alongside* the science.

Webinar March 19 for anyone tracking ocean CDR risks.

First results from the first EPA-permitted ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) experiment.

WHOI's Loc-Ness project dispersed 65,000 litres of sodium hydroxide over 1km² in the Gulf of Maine. Over 4 days: 2-10 tonnes of additional CO₂ drawn into the ocean. No ecosystem harm detected.

Small scale, but this is exactly the data the field has been missing — open-ocean OAE measurement has been nearly impossible until now.

Where should the US build electrochemical marine CDR facilities? New study analyzed 38 coastal sites with seawater intakes and clustered them into 5 regional hubs.

Top ranked:
🔹 South (TX/LA) — cheapest energy
🔹 West — strong clean energy
🔹 Northeast — high removal capacity

Scored on CO₂ capacity, cost/ton, grid emissions, social vulnerability & hydrogen infra.

Big news for ocean CDR: WHOI's LOC-NESS trial sequestered CO₂ using sodium hydroxide off Cape Cod — no measurable harm to marine life.

2-50 tonnes removed, locked for thousands of years. First open-ocean alkalinity trial in the US.

pH returned to normal within days. Marine organisms showed no significant differences inside vs outside the alkalinity patch.
