"The EU's done climate change the economist's way, pricing CO2 emissions & incentivising global adoption.
"But it's outflanked by China's greentech mercantilism, developed mainly for non-environmental reasons, & Trump's accidental Iran war carbon price hike."

Who Profits from the Protest? Transmission, Turbines, and the Dark Money of Distrust

In the Wimmera Mallee town of St Arnaud in 2023, around 300 residents joined a tractor rally through the streets to protest renewable energy infrastructure. At a community meeting about the proposed VNI West transmission project, government representatives were heckled until Victoria Police advised the meeting be adjourned. More than 80 landholders signed a declaration refusing survey access to the company responsible for building the transmission line. Many of them had first learned their properties were in the proposed corridor through a QR code in a local newspaper.

Australia's broken donation laws are the hidden infrastructure behind manufactured opposition to renewable energy — and it's farmers and regional communities paying the price.

“A key factor in the rapid acceptance of #ecocide law is the definition itself, which resulted from a drafting program commissioned in 2021. The definition focuses on the level of harm, not on specific activities or sectors. Similar to how criminal law works, a murderer is defined by the outcome, not the method. The ecocide definition emphasizes the harm caused rather than forbidding particular activities. It does not prohibit industrial fishing or mineral mining; rather, it outlines a threshold of harm that should not be crossed. This approach encourages best practices without alienating any sector, which has been hugely helpful in facilitating constructive dialogue. So, while there are countries that are not ready to support ecocide, we have not encountered many that openly oppose it.”

Criminalizing Ecocide: A Conversation with Stop Ecocide International’s CEO Jojo Mehta - Georgetown Journal of International Affairs

GJIA: For readers who may be unfamiliar with the term, what is “ecocide”? Jojo Mehta: Ecocide refers to the most severe, widespread, and long-term harm to nature. While environmental laws and regulations exist worldwide, they are largely fragmented, piecemeal, and insufficient. Our organization works to advance legislation to criminalize ecocide, meaning that the most serious […]

"Think global, act local" has a structural flaw: judged on its own terms, almost any decision looks right — which is how a £100m bat tunnel got built, by people doing exactly what they were asked, with nobody lying or cutting corners. The same gap is opening up in New York's solar boom.

"Solar spreadsheets" follows both and suggests a fix for the flaw.

Environmentalism needs a full accounting "Think global, act local" has been environmentalism's working instruction for half a century. But it has had a structural flaw built into it from the start: a decision made locally is by definition judged locally — against whether this project, on its own, is worth

For the even bigger picture around US climate litigation news, we recommend The White House Effect.

Using exclusively archival material, this film tells the dramatic origin story of the climate crisis and how a political battle in the George H.W. Bush administration changed the course of history. As the world prepares for the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, President George H.W. Bush faces mounting pressure to make a decision that will change the course of history—culminating in the U.S. undermining a global agreement to set hard limits on emissions, setting the stage for the increasingly hot, dangerous, and polarized future we all now face.
