Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that prevents loops in Ethernet networks by automatically detecting redundant links and placing some of them into a blocking state to maintain a loop-free topology 😎👇

Bloomberg: #Cisco shares gained 6.5% in premarket trading after the #network-equipment giant boosted its forecast, showing progress in its effort to capture more #AI spending. The stock, at about $79.40, is inching closer to its record of $82 from the dot-com era.

I've been using and recommending Netgear #network equipment a lot for home lab and small office use, because you get a lot of bank for your buck with them. But they're from the #USA, so they're on the shitlist now.

Looking at Mikrotik now, they have a nice range of managed switches for friendly prices and are from Europe. #Latvia to be specific. Now, Latvia doesn't have a stellar record wrt QUILTBAG+ rights, so that's a bit worrisome. They did have (or still have?) a gay president though, and they seem to be moving forwards instead of backwards.

i think I'll try some of their gear, but donate twice the price of the gear I buy from them to a Latvian LGBTQIA+ rights organisation just to be sure.

Any optinions on Latvia in general or Mikrotik in particular with regards to human rights? Or other brands I should look at?

Any network people on here who know if this old thing is still worth anything? I have no clue as I'm not familiar with network equipment at all.

From a quick lookup of the model number on eBay, there seems to be quite a few being sold for around €35-40. Might try that on a local marketplace.

@bpeel IIRC, there are #RJ45 #plug|s with more durable clips than those for consumer use. (@loremo might now more.)

Also, the #networkEquipment used by #ISP|s (and by, I'd assume, the #backbone #provider|s) can have different #socket|s than just RJ45, even swappable ones in #SFP slots, so some can be e.g. for optical fibers. And there's even SFP-to-SFP "Direct Attach Cables" without additional sockets/plugs. See e.g. https://superuser.com/a/1300549/363905

RJ45 -SFP Connection?

I originally thought that SFP connection involved optical fiber. However, I came across an RJ45-SFP Copper device. Thus, it appears to be an SFP device that connects to an RJ45 slot and conducts th...
