Five #seabirds added to UK red list of most concern

The new entries include the Arctic tern, known for its incredible migration, the giant skua, or pirate of the sea, and two types of gull.

The UK is known for its colonies of #seabirds nesting in huge numbers on cliffs - but populations are plummeting amid a host of pressures, from #climate change to a lack of food.

Seabirds are in trouble because of #ClimateChange, unsustainable #fishing, offshore #RenewableEnergy development, and #HabitatLoss.

Pretty much hits the nail on the head in my view. The main reason why our politics are f****d - and therefore the #climate the planet .... #Collapse2040 #Collapse

Europe is not far off, even though they don't have FPTP. The populists are on the rise again (Starmer is Tory light and won't stop the rise of populism in the UK). It feels more and more like Europe in the 1930s, but with worldwide existential issues of #ClimateChange and #NatureLoss on top making it an even bigger problem than it was then.

Nature groups launch legal bid over wildlife loss

A coalition of more than 80 #nature conservation groups is launching a legal bid to force whichever party is in power next month to improve government targets on tackling #wildlife decline in England.

One in six UK species are currently at risk of #extinction and a legally-binding target was set by the Conservative government to stop #NatureLoss by 2030.

Organisations including the National Trust, the RSPB and the Wildlife Trusts have also joined forces to urge politicians from all parties to pledge to do more to boost #biodiversity.

Nature groups launch legal challenge over England's wildlife loss - BBC News

Countryside and wildlife conservation groups want a judicial review of government action on nature loss.

BBC News

At least three #river barriers collapsed last year due to heavy rain in #Norway, #NorthernIreland, and #Slovenia, the report found. Last week, a dam burst in the Orsk region of #Russia as heavy rains flooded the area and forced more than 100,000 people across #Russia and #Kazakhstan to flee.

Obsolete barriers that were built to cope with different #climates harmed the river and increased #NatureLoss, said Wanningen.
