Listening to pundits nattering about Japan's geopolitical predicament, came across the word "コウモリ外交(kōmori-gaikō: bat diplomacy)" and found it was linked to Aesop's fable "The Birds, the Beasts, and the Bat"[1]
Interesting that the moral is "He that is neither one thing nor the other has no friends"[2] and not "All is fair in love and war"[3] ...or "birds (bats, i.e. middle powers) of a feather".
