Quite a lovely place to look for native wildflowers! The trail used to be a towpath near the Rappahannock River for a canal that faded away when the railroad came. The area has recovered nicely. #NativePlants #Mayapple #virginia

I know of only two patches of Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) within walking distance—one being right behind my house. They are one of the first plants to pop up each spring, their distinctive leaves like umbrellas. I finally got photos of the flowers this year!

Behold the mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, American mandrake. It may have "apple" in the name, but don't eat it--it is poisonous (though it also has medicinal uses--just don't snack on it!) #wildflowers #Mayapple #mandrake

The Virgina Native Plant Society has chosen the native Mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, as the Wildflower of the year for 2025!

This is a link to purchase a shirt with the wildflower of the year on it. A portion of proceeds go directly to the non-profit :]
