France, May 1968. The moment the old world cracked.

In this iconic shot by Marc Riboud, the Sorbonne Chapel stands unmoved behind a chaotic barricade of overturned cars and uprooted paving stones.

For me, this image perfectly captures the spirit of the time. It wasn’t just a riot; it was a poetic attempt to "forbid forbidding" and find the "beach" hidden beneath the grey layers of bureaucracy and tradition.

Why it still resonates:

  • The Aesthetic of Chaos: Riboud managed to turn a scene of civil unrest into a masterpiece of composition and raw emotion.
  • The Legacy: The revolution didn't topple the government, but it fundamentally rewired the cultural DNA of Europe.

A reminder that sometimes, to see the future, you have to rearrange the streets.

I enjoyed the short book written by Kadour Naïmi called "Freedom in Solidarity" about his time in France during the #May1968 uprising. His position as a Maoist (of sorts) and Algerian immigrant give him a fascinating perspective, and he's rather reflexive about those experiences. I particularly enjoyed the final chapter which describes the life-long impact the uprising had upon him: his involvement in #unions and #self-management initiatives, and radical #theater and writing. #Reading #AKPress

BTW

fascists are incapable of using the post #Mai68 #May1968 pedagogy we know as “desconstruction” so they’ve ramped up their cooptation.

i scream every time i see American media parroting Bannon’s very deliberate appropriation of what are basically antifascist educational techniques

this is the same with their appropriation of “grooming”: they know it is the cornerstone of all cult-like indoctrination, especially fascism.

so they're trying to delegitimize awareness with transphobia.

An excellent discussion about the May 1968 French protests, what was really behind them but, most importantly, what they really mean for us today.

Two fascinating documents on the #May1968 revolt in Paris…

1. A 96-page Students for a Democratic Society magazine (CAW!) co-edited with Mouvement 22 Mars detailing the revolt with numerous translated documents: https://www.sds-1960s.org/caw3-1968-fall.pdf

One of the most fascinating "film essays" & works of personal & collective #memory is #ChrisMarker's film, A GRIN WITHOUT A CAT (below is the 1993 re-edited version of the even longer 1977 film).

The #French, to this day, are both haunted by & inspired by the heady days of #May1968. What has become of the #Left? Where does #Socialism stand today? How are we to interpret the past? What hope for the future?
