ATP - Berrettini stops at the eighth round of the "Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters," the third ATP "1000" of the season, with a prize pool of €6,309,095, being held on the red clay of the Country Club of Monte-Carlo, in Monaco.

The almost 30-year-old Roman, ATP No. 90 and coming off a straight-set 6-0 victory against Daniil Medvedev, was defeated 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 13 minutes of play by Joao Fonseca. The young Brazilian prodigy, world No. 40, awaits in the quarter-finals one of Alexander Zverev or Zizou Bergs.

As for Jannik Sinner, the world No. 2 faces Czech Tomas Machac in the eighth round of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in the second match of the day on Court Rainier III. “So che perderò la posizione di numero uno al mondo, non so se in questo torneo o nel prossimo. Devo difendere molti punti e sarà difficile mantenerli tutti. E se ci riuscissi, Jannik guadagnerebbe punti perché lui non ne ha da difendere”. Così Carlos Alcaraz dopo la vittoria netta contro Sebastian Baez per 6-1 6-3. Una risposta a Sinner, che qualche minuto prima aveva invece dominato Humbert con un risultato simile (6-3 6-0).
Lo spagnolo deve difendere infatti ben 4.300 punti raccolti sulla terra rossa nella passata stagione, più di chiunque altro, grazie alle vittorie a Monte-Carlo, Roma e al Roland Garros, oltre alla finale di Barcellona. “Farò del mio meglio, ma per me, il numero uno non è una priorità in questo momento. L’obiettivo è giocare al meglio sulla terra battuta. Vedremo come andrà il tour“, ha spiegato Alcaraz.
Il ranking non è una sua priorità perché – numeri alla mano – Sinner è davvero molto vicino a tornare numero uno al mondo per un motivo ben definito: l’azzurro non difenderà punti fino agli Internazionali d’Italia (era stato sospeso per il caso Clostebol) ed è inaspettatamente riuscito a recuperare diversi punti tra Indian Wells e Miami su cemento. “Sono rimasto sorpreso dal mio livello, sia nel tennis che nei movimenti. Mi sono preparato bene la settimana scorsa. Sono arrivato qui con molto entusiasmo ed energia. Pensavo di giocare peggio e sono molto contento di tutto, tranne per un paio di cose che non ho fatto bene nel secondo set e che hanno permesso a Baez di rientrare in partita”, ha aggiunto.
“Era passato quasi un anno dall’ultima volta che avevo giocato una partita sulla terra battuta e, onestamente, mi mancava perché è una superficie che adoro. Mi mancava sporcarmi un po’ le mani”, ha sottolineato lo spagnolo, che ora affronterà ora il vincitore della sfida tra Etcheverry e Atmane.

The ranking isn’t a priority for him because – looking at the numbers – Sinner is really close to returning to number one in the world for a very defined reason: the Italian won’t defend points until the Internazionali d’Italia (he had been suspended due to the Clostebol case) and unexpectedly managed to recover several points between Indian Wells and Miami on hard courts. “I was surprised by my level, both in tennis and in movement. I prepared myself well last week. I arrived here with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. I thought I was going to play worse and I’m very happy about everything, except for a couple of things I didn’t do well in the second set, which allowed Baez to get back into the match,” he added.

“It had been almost a year since I’d played a match on clay and, honestly, I missed it because it’s a surface that I love. I missed getting a little dirt on my hands,” the Spaniard emphasized, who will now face the winner of the match between Etcheverry and Atmane.

Carlos Alcaraz ritrova la terra rossa, la superficie che più di qualsiasi altra gli ha dato soddisfazioni nel corso della sua carriera. Lo spagnolo giocherà a Monte Carlo, poi anche a Barcellona, Madrid, Roma e Parigi. Chi non vuole partecipare tra i big quindi non riceve penalità o multe. “Sinceramente mi ha sorpreso che Sinner sia venuto qui a giocare a Monte-Carlo dopo aver vinto a Indian Wells e Miami – ha ammesso Alcaraz -. Però questo vuol dire che sta bene fisicamente e che è in grado di vincere dovunque. Spero di poterlo affrontare qui a Monte-Carlo, perché quest’anno non ci siamo ancora sfidati. Sinner è infatti reduce dal Sunshine Double (vittoria a Indian Wells e vittoria a Miami), mentre Alcaraz – dopo un inizio esaltante con i successi agli Australian Open e all’Atp 500 di Doha – è stato eliminato in semifinale a Indian Wells e al secondo turno a Miami per mano di Korda. Ciò vuol dire che se Sinner dovesse vincere a Monte Carlo (a prescindere dal risultato del rivale spagnolo), lo scavalcherebbe in testa al ranking Atp e tornerebbe primo a distanza di diversi mesi.

Players who don’t want to participate don’t receive penalties or fines. “Honestly, I was surprised that Sinner came here to play in Monte-Carlo after winning in Indian Wells and Miami,” Alcaraz admitted. “But that means he’s in good physical shape and that he’s able to win anywhere. I hope I can face him here in Monte-Carlo, because we haven’t challenged each other on the red clay yet this year. I hope we can do it during the season.”

Sinner is coming off the Sunshine Double (victory in Indian Wells and victory in Miami), while Alcaraz – after an impressive start with victories at the Australian Open and the Doha ATP 500 – was eliminated in the semi-finals in Indian Wells and in the second round in Miami by Korda. This means that if Sinner were to win in Monte Carlo (regardless of the result of the Spanish rival), he would overtake Alcaraz at the top of the ATP ranking and return to number one after several months.
