Next was an excellent talk by John Van Reenen on the relationship between #regulation and economic performance at the #MITIDE. Using the strict regulatory environment in #France as a jumping off point, Van Reenen shows how the high regulatory burden there does significantly impact incremental #innovation but seems to leave larger innovations unaffected. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssvNLhOYTzU (5/7)

Last was a fascinating talk by Sonny Tambe @ #MITIDE on how #RemoteWork changes the #diversity of the #labor pool for #tech #startups. Using some nice #data from #AngelList, Tambe shows that remote job postings attract more diverse and experienced applicants. An extremely vital part of the discussion is if this is desirable if remote jobs lead to lower promotion rates and career mobility, so we'll have to keep our eye on this. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyr12Eg63E0 (6/6)

Next was an interesting talk by Emil Palikot on using computer vision to predict financial transactions in an online platform @ the #MITIDE. Lots of work has shown that including profile pics on platforms like #Airbnb lead to biased outcomes, but this work probes pic features that may activate these biases & what can be done to mitigate them. I would like to see further work looking at the underlying socioeconomic signals these pictures are sending. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xeMmj-MRuc (7/9)

Last was an incredible, devastating talk by Rem Koning at #MITIDE on a quantitative view of #bias in the #VC industry. Wow. This thorough analysis of #ProductHunt #data, combined with data on #startup survival rates, funding, and more, paints a bleak picture of #gender bias across the whole consumer startup ecosystem. Depressing, but highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBm5nR6Tq50 (5/5)

Next was an excellent panel at #MITIDE on #algorithm #transparency in #SocialMedia with @eckles, Kartik Hosanagar, and Daphne Keller. Some other work on social media #networks conflicts with a bit of what's presented here, but the conversations on transparency, #privacy, and #regulation were insightful. I especially like the segment on #decentralization at the end is particularly prescient given the influx of folks over to #Mastodon. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=955a7aw0t7M&t=2s (7/9)

Last was a deep dive into Tencent's #Healthcare #platform with Alex Ng at #MITIDE. During the pandemic, #Tencent has been busy trying to build a platform to support #telehealth, COVID-19 testing, and more. Unfortunately, some of the potentially problematic uses of the platform weren't discussed, but good to see this work nonetheless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWq5YpZFXvg (7/7)

Next was a good panel at #MITIDE on enterprise #talent development #platforms w/Marshall Van Alstyne, Anant Agarwal, Tapaswee Chandele, Chris Dellarocas, and Patrick Petitti. There are so many platforms out there now where people can learn on their own, but how should companies integrate them internally? How should they think about consulting platforms as supplements? Certainly, the ground is shifting for some of the established players & practices in these spaces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeN3N3kR3Pg (5/7)

Next was a fantastic pair of talks on social science #experimentation in #healthcare with Hengchen Dai and Jake Bowers at #MITIDE. Both talks try to use text messaging to encourage COVID-19 #vaccinations, to little effect. Bowers's talk, however, goes beyond the experimental effects and gets into how to ethically engage different stakeholders in study design. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4UorcUHALI&list=PL5FQGISvWBK3gNFqx2eboI8etItUC2MFW&index=4 (4/6)

Next was another great #MITIDE panel on responsible #AI with some giants in the field: @ruchowdh, Renée Richardson Gosline, @geomblog, and Chris Gilliard. The insights on responsible AI here from a variety of perspectives are incredibly insightful, although all the talk of fantastic past initiatives at #Twitter were a bit depressing. Highly recommend

Next were two mezmerizing talks by John List and Isaiah Andrews at #MITIDE on how to statistically understand what #experiments are actually telling you. Experiments should be central not just to #science, but to #tech, #management, and more. Highly recommend
