The Governance Stress Test: 002 🌿🏛️

Let's explore the tension between your system’s local independence and larger networks.

Today’s Stress Test:
Can localized governance entities maintain autonomy while cooperating with larger systems?

“The success of collective action often depends on the ability of local actors to cooperate and coordinate without losing their independence.”
—Elinor Ostrom

“Decentralized communities must remain vibrant and self-sustaining while engaging with larger structures.”
—Murray Bookchin

Every system of governance hits this dilemma, from State vs. Federal to Chapter vs. National Org. When you see small communities, local chapters, or even FOSS instances plug into a massive network, what usually happens to their autonomy?

They usually keep their autonomy
They get swallowed by the larger org
It's a constant, messy negotiation

“A protocol does not need to encode governance explicitly in order to shape it; it shapes governance by determining which mechanisms are easy to build, which are hard, and which are effectively impossible within the constraints the architecture imposes.”

The Purpose of Protocols

Every open social protocol generates shared resources, but none has produced a governance framework adequate to those resources. So who fills that vacuum?

Ah, the "Small Web"—where the only thing tinier than the user base is the amount of content that's not broken without #JavaScript. 😆 Apparently, the future of web browsing is pretending it's 1998 and calling it #decentralization. 🌐👾

My journey away from toxic online accounts

-Find links to alternative platforms below- I have been annoyed with the amoral/fascist/pro-russian online platforms for a while. I stopped using any BRICS ...

I wonder, in terms of #decentralization tech, can we have #p2p gossiping connections while still having privacy and deniability?

The Governance Stress Test 001 🌿🏛️

I think it’d be a good fediverse start to talk about polycentric governance.

Today’s Stress Test:
Does your system support multiple, independent decision-making centers?

Elinor Ostrom noted that in a polycentric system, "many centers of decision-making that are formally independent also interact with each other in an orderly fashion."

Instead of a pyramid with a boss at the top making decisions, it's a network of autonomous groups collaborating. The Fediverse is a great example of this.

I’m curious about your offline or organizational experiences, though. When you've seen this attempted in co-ops, local governments, FOSS, or community groups, how does it usually play out?

Works Beautifully
Works but it’s very messy
Usually defaults back to a “boss”

Hello! I'm Alistair, developer of Mochi, a decentralised application platform. It's built with Go, libp2p, Starlark, and React. It ships with lots of apps such as feeds, forums, project management, CRM, and wikis. We're launching version 0.3 soon, and looking for early adopters who aren't afraid of rough edges.
