#PortlandME - Lecture - #LivingAtlas for Bioregional Regeneration

#PortlandPublicLibrary, Rines Auditorium
Wednesday, March 25, 2026
5:30pm–7:00pm
Free. Adults 19+.

"Glenn Page will be presenting on a new idea called the 'Living Atlas for Bioregional Regeneration.' The Living Atlas is a framework and a tool to help better understand the natural world. To do so, it behaves like a living being. It grows and adapts with every physical and digital interaction. It takes in all sorts of information from different places and people to create connections between the two. With these connections, the Living Atlas can highlight the causes and solutions of environmental health. The goal is then to be able to show which problems and responses are unique, which can be replicated, and what information is useful to the user.

"The Living Atlas is an emergent, ever-evolving and customizable experience in both digital and physical form. It is a powerful tool for exploring bioregional complexity and for identifying opportunities for deeper engagement. It weaves together ecological, social, financial, cultural, and spiritual dimensions, helping practitioners learn, share, and connect their regeneration efforts for greater collective impact. It is a living system that grows and adapts with those who engage with it."

Akis Karagiannis has written an excellent synopsis of the #LivingPlanet Symposium #earthobservation

https://www.spectralreflectance.space/p/reflections-from-the-2025-living

"Several sessions that were supposed to feature NASA researchers ended up half-empty. One session had eight scheduled speakers; only three presented."

American science and technology is not going to be able to come back from this.

Reflections from the 2025 Living Planet Symposium

It was amazing attending the Living Planet Symposium last week (21–27 June 2025) in Vienna.

The cascade effects of #sunscreens on the environment such as corals, dunes and fish and on humans directly and indirectly are manifold. We're part of nature and taking the #OneHealth approach is inescapable, which requires a change of culture, especially in the global north and 'the West':
- Be in the sun mornings and evenings,
- not longer than two hours at a time,
- stay in shade,
- cover yourself,
- apply mineral-based sun-screens.

Deep Dive: Why you’d better check the sunscreen you use – DW – 07/12/2024

Hawaii and other tourist hot spots have banned some UV filters found in sunscreen, in part thanks to a fateful snack run for Oreos that put one ecotoxicologist on the trail of unsuspected coral killer in the ocean. Twenty years later, his search continues amid a cacophony of misinformation about sun protection.

Weekly (hopefully!) river walk with Maron the Shiba. It's great to see her so confident with going into the water. In the summer we'll have to try swimming somewhere deep. There's something different to notice during every walk when you take the time to go, feel the weather, see the plants, hear the river...

I uploaded a song as an aid for appreciating (worshiping?) the local river, along with the writing by Natalie Diaz..

As people debate the costs, timeline, difficulties and challenges of keeping our planet habitable, it helps to have a reminder of what our (realistic) alternatives are (we don't have any).

Earthrise - Emergence Magazine

Directed by Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee, this documentary tells the story of the first image captured of the Earth from space in 1968, as recalled by the Apollo 8 astronauts 50 years later.
