#SCOTUS Restores Rep. #LaurelLibby’s Floor Privileges, Enjoins Maine Dems’ Censure of Her

By Libby Palanza, May 20, 2025

"The censure sparking this lawsuit came after Libby refused to apologize for a viral social media post depicting a biologically male high school student athlete who took first place in a girls’ track and field contest.

"After Libby refused House leadership’s demand to apologize for the post — a condition of her censure — Speaker Fecteau stripped her of her right to vote and and participate in floor debates.

Libby still retained her right to sponsor legislation, present motions, engage in committee work, and testify at public hearings."

2nd-Place Runner in High School Race Rips #Maine #GOP Lawmaker for Attacking Trans Winner

Brett Wilkins, May 15, 2025

"A high school runner in Maine who finished second to a transgender competitor at a recent track meet said this week that a Republican state lawmaker's 'hateful' crusade targeting trans athletes—not the fact that she had to compete against one—dampened her sporting joy.

Anelise Feldman, a freshman at Yarmouth High School in southern Maine, finished second to Soren Stark-Chessa, a multisport standout at rival North Yarmouth Academy, at a May 2 intramural meet.

"' I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school's standards,' Feldman wrote in a letter to The Portland Press Herald published Wednesday. 'I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn't diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race.'

"Feldman's letter was prompted by State Rep. #LaurelLibby's (R-90) comments during a Fox News interview earlier this month in which the lawmaker, while not naming Stark-Chessa, referred to her accomplishments and accused transgender athletes of 'pushing many, many of our young women out of the way in their ascent to the podium.'

Feldman stressed: "I don't feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points."

" 'We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school,' she added. 'Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren's participation in the girls' track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.' "

Bill aims to curb doxxing of minors by adults in Maine

The proposed bill would prohibit the doxxing of a minor and authorize related civil action against adult perpetrators.

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Maine lawmakers are considering an #AntiDoxxing bill that was introduced in an effort to protect minors from adults online.

"#LD537 refers to the term 'doxxing,' which means to share someone's personal information usually with malicious intent.

"The anti-doxxing bill was submitted to the legislature in December 2024 by Democratic Rep. Melanie Sachs of Freeport and other state lawmakers.

"Sachs said this particular bill stems from an incident in 2023 involving a Freeport minor being targeted online by an adult.

"After looking further into that incident, Sachs said she observed Maine did not have the resources to deal with doxxing.

"The proposed bill would prohibit adults from sharing or posting personal identifying information of a minor with the intent to cause fear or harm to the child or their relatives.

"Recently, a #transgender teen from Greely won a state track title. The student-athlete became the center of conversation on #TransgenderPeople in girls' and women's sports in Maine after state Rep. #LaurelLibby made a social media post about it. State House lawmakers voted to censure Libby last week over the post.

"Sachs said LD 537 was already in the works and submitted before the February incident occurred.

"'I put in this bill last year, not to remedy any one situation but to find relief for any situation where an adult doxxes a child,' Sachs said. 'We should not have to legislate #decency, but in this day and age, it is really important for all of us to come together, regardless of what the issue is, to say adults should not doxx children, period.'

"A public hearing on LD 536 was held Monday morning in Augusta."
