Se avete visto il programma televisivo Airport Security, saprete che negli aeroporti possono capitare ritrovamenti incredibili, dalla droga agli oggetti più assurdi. Ma Zhang Kequn, cittadino cinese, ha portato il concetto di insolito a un livello tutto suo: all’aeroporto internazionale Jomo Kenyatta di Nairobi, è stato arrestato dopo essere stato fermato con oltre 2000 formiche “regine” nel bagaglio, destinate alla Cina. Un traffico tanto insolito quanto illegale.
L’uomo non ha ancora fornito spiegazioni ufficiali, ma gli investigatori ritengono che possa essere collegato a una rete di traffico di formiche smantellata lo scorso anno in Kenya. Le formiche, protette dai trattati internazionali sulla biodiversità, rientrano in una categoria di specie il cui commercio è severamente regolamentato, proprio per prevenire danni agli ecosistemi locali.
Negli ultimi anni, il Kenya Wildlife Service ha segnalato una crescente richiesta di formiche da giardino, scientificamente note come Messor cephalotes, soprattutto in Europa e Asia. Qui i collezionisti le allevano come animali domestici, e fanno di un insetto minuscolo in un bene ambito e redditizio. Questo boom ha alimentato un mercato nero pericoloso, spesso nascosto in valigie o spedizioni internazionali.
Precedenti giudiziari
Non è il primo caso del genere nel Paese. Lo scorso maggio, un tribunale keniano ha condannato quattro uomini, due belgi, un vietnamita e un cittadino locale, a un anno di carcere per aver tentato di esportare migliaia di formiche regine. Un caso senza precedenti, che aveva già messo in luce quanto il contrabbando di insetti protetti possa assumere contorni paradossali ma gravi sul piano legale e ambientale.

If you’ve seen the television show Airport Security, you’ll know that incredible finds can happen at airports, from drugs to the most absurd objects. But Zhang Kequn, a Chinese citizen, took the concept of the unusual to another level: at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, he was arrested after being caught with over 2000 “queen” ants in his luggage, destined for China. Such an unusual and illegal traffic.

The man has not yet provided official explanations, but investigators believe he may be linked to a trafficking network of ants dismantled last year in Kenya. The ants, protected by international biodiversity treaties, fall into a category of species whose trade is strictly regulated, precisely to prevent damage to local ecosystems.

In recent years, the Kenya Wildlife Service has reported a growing demand for garden ants, scientifically known as Messor cephalotes, especially in Europe and Asia. Here, collectors breed them as pets, and turn a tiny insect into a coveted and profitable asset. This boom has fueled a dangerous black market, often hidden in suitcases or international shipments.

Previous Court Cases

It’s not the first case of its kind in the country. Last May, a Kenyan court sentenced four men, two Belgians, a Vietnamese man, and a local citizen, to a year in prison for attempting to export thousands of queen ants. An unprecedented case that had already highlighted how the smuggling of protected insects can take paradoxical but serious legal and environmental contours.

Agi: Le Università Lumsa e Cuea rafforzano la partnership con una scuola invernale in Kenya

AGI - Quattordici studenti italiani dell'Università privata Lumsa si sono recati in Kenya per partecipare a una speciale scuola invernale di due settimane, nell'ambito di una partnership con la Catholic University of East Africa (Cuea). Questa iniziativa, promossa dal Centro Universitario Lumsa per l'Africa, presieduto dal diplomatico Pietro Sebastiani, mira a promuovere la condivisione delle conoscenze e la collaborazione con i paesi africani impegnati in nuovi modelli di sviluppo basati sull'innovazione e sulle tecnologie digitali. Il programma ha incluso lezioni, seminari e scambi con studenti e professori kenioti, oltre ad attività extra-aula. Queste attività hanno permesso ai partecipanti di sperimentare in prima persona la realtà sociale, imprenditoriale, diplomatica, culturale ed economica del Kenya, uno dei paesi più dinamici del continente africano.
In loco, il Professor Gennaro Iasevoli, Prorettore per la Ricerca e l'Internazionalizzazione, e il Professor Plinio Limata, che guidavano il gruppo, sono stati accolti dal Professor Damian M. Maingi, Prorettore Aggiunto per la Ricerca, l'Innovazione, lo Sviluppo e la Promozione. Insieme, hanno discusso di possibili progetti di collaborazione tra le due università. Gli studenti hanno visitato i quartieri popolari di Nairobi, la nuova "smart city" di Konza, importante polo tecnologico, e il Centro Spaziale Luigi Broglio di Malindi, centro all'avanguardia per lo sviluppo di nanosatelliti di ultima generazione, i CubeSat.
Gli studenti hanno inoltre incontrato l'Ambasciatore d'Italia in Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, il Direttore dell'Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS), Fabio Minniti, il Direttore dell'Agenzia per il Commercio Estero (ICE), Giuseppe Manenti, e l'Ambasciatore del Kenya in Italia, Fredrick Mattwanga'a. Gli studenti hanno anche avuto l'opportunità di incontrare rappresentanti della comunità italiana in Kenya, imprenditori e l'Amministratore Delegato di Eni Kenya, Daniela Morra. L'iniziativa offre inoltre borse di studio a laureati africani (provenienti da Kenya, Etiopia e Somalia) per proseguire gli studi magistrali presso la Lumsa, rafforzando ulteriormente lo scambio reciproco.

AGI - Fourteen Italian students from the private Lumsa University have traveled to Kenya to participate in a two-week special winter school, as part of a partnership with the Catholic University of East Africa (Cuea). This initiative, promoted by the Lumsa University Center for Africa, chaired by diplomat Pietro Sebastiani, aims to promote the sharing of knowledge and collaboration with African countries engaged in new development models based on innovation and digital technologies. The program included lessons, seminars, and exchanges with Kenyan students and professors, as well as extracurricular activities. These activities allowed participants to firsthand experience the social, entrepreneurial, diplomatic, cultural, and economic realities of Kenya, one of the most dynamic countries in the African continent.

On site, Professor Gennaro Iasevoli, Pro-Rector for Research and Internationalization, and Professor Plinio Limata, who led the group, were welcomed by Professor Damian M. Maingi, Associate Pro-Rector for Research, Innovation, Development, and Promotion. Together, they discussed possible collaboration projects between the two universities. The students visited the informal settlements of Nairobi, the new “smart city” of Konza, an important technological hub, and the Luigi Broglio Space Center of Malindi, a cutting-edge center for the development of nanosatellites of the latest generation, the CubeSats.

The students also met the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, the Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), Fabio Minniti, the Director of the Italian Trade Agency (ICE), Giuseppe Manenti, and the Kenyan Ambassador to Italy, Fredrick Mattwanga'a. The students also had the opportunity to meet representatives of the Italian community in Kenya, entrepreneurs, and the CEO of Eni Kenya, Daniela Morra. The initiative also offers scholarships to African graduates (from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia) to pursue master’s degrees at Lumsa, further strengthening mutual exchange.

Agi: Les Universités Lumsa et Cuea consolident leur partenariat avec une école d’hiver au Kenya

AGI - Quatorze étudiants italiens de l’Université privée Lumsa se sont rendus au Kenya pour participer à une école d’hiver spéciale de deux semaines, dans le cadre du partenariat avec l’Université catholique d’Afrique de l’Est (Cuea). Cette initiative, portée par le Centre universitaire Lumsa pour l’Afrique, dirigé par le diplomate Pietro Sebastiani, vise à promouvoir le partage des connaissances et la collaboration avec les pays africains engagés dans de nouveaux modèles de développement fondés sur l’innovation et les technologies numériques. Le programme sur place comprenait des conférences, des colloques et des échanges avec des étudiants et des professeurs kenyans, ainsi que des activités en dehors des salles de cours. Celles-ci ont permis aux participants de découvrir concrètement les réalités sociales, entrepreneuriales, diplomatiques, culturelles et économiques du Kenya, l’un des pays les plus dynamiques du continent africain.
Sur place, le professeur Gennaro Iasevoli, vice-recteur chargé de la recherche et de l’internationalisation, et le professeur Plinio Limata, qui encadraient le groupe, ont été accueillis par le professeur Damian M. Maingi, vice-recteur adjoint à la recherche, à l’innovation, au développement et à la promotion. Ensemble, ils ont évoqué de possibles projets de collaboration entre les deux universités. Les étudiants ont visité les quartiers populaires de Nairobi, la nouvelle "ville intelligente" de Konza - important pôle technologique - ainsi que le Centre spatial Luigi Broglio à Malindi, devenu une référence dans le développement de la dernière génération de nanosatellites, les CubeSats.
Les étudiants ont aussi rencontré l’ambassadeur d’Italie au Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, le directeur de l’Agence italienne pour la coopération au développement (AICS) Fabio Minniti, et le directeur de l’Agence italienne pour le commerce extérieur (ICE) Giuseppe Manenti, ainsi que l’ambassadeur du Kenya en Italie, Fredrick Mattwanga’a. Les étudiants ont en outre échangé avec des représentants de la communauté italienne au Kenya, des entrepreneurs, ainsi qu’avec la directrice générale d’Eni Kenya, Daniela Morra. L'initiative offre également des bourses d'études à des diplômés africains (du Kenya, d'Éthiopie et de Somalie) pour poursuivre des études de master à Lumsa, renforçant ainsi les échanges mutuels.
