Though not really my thing, it's interesting and original and not unenjoyable.

Would I have liked it more if I read Bronte first?

Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys

Listening to #WideSargassoSea by #JeanRhys.

So well done.

And I'm cooked after 10 munutes.
So v e r y despair inducing for me.

(Written 1966 as a prequel to #JaneAyre - the back story of the mad woman in the attic. Small liberties taken with actual historical chronology.)

Classified as #PostColonialLiterature.
And I see just about every human on the planet is living a post-colonial life.

Yet the Xia dynasty, the Greeks, Romans, etc have had postcolonialism around for millenia.

Trying to find audiobooks by #JeanRhys is frustrating.

#Audible has nothing, nada, zilch.
Librivox "No results found".
Next trying YT.

EDIT: YT has The Wide Sargasso Sea - a post-colonial response (prequel around #EdwardFairfaxRochester) to #JaneEyre.
Performed well, with accents. Produced by Isis Audio - probably 2007, performance by #AnnaBentinck.

But only a radioplay of #GoodMorningMidnight was found.

Good Morning, Midnight by Roderick Graham

Fun things about studying up on #JeanRhys is that there have been theses for Masters and PhDs written and published on the web.

#ItsHowTheLightGetsIn
Some of them are dreadfully written.
And, here's the lovely bit, after giving up on one after 5 pages, I find I have learnt a lot about where Rhys fitted in to "Literature" in the 1920s and 30s and where she fits in now.
All while I complained about the writing style of the student. πŸ™ƒ

Whereas "good" writing would have been boring & opaque. 🀫

Looking for an #Audiobook of #JeanRhys' #GoodMorningMidnight.

Anyone know of one?

Maybe in a collection of short stories?

(That'd be a human reader, non-"AI enhanced" audio.)

#Audible (at least in Australia) shows nothing by Jean Rhys. (Just a biography of her.)
Nothing, on G, (but then that's been crapified).
#Bookstadon

Who knows why the book was chosen?
Not I.

But #GoodMorningMidnight immediately after #BoySwallowsUniverse is ... a jarring experience.

Gone is the criminally violent melodrama. And positivity.
In is something that each member of the venerable club has lived beside. Or lived out. For decades.

#GoodMorningMidnight

Only seen snippets of reviews so far.
And some photos.

You're going to take this the wrong, wrong way I'm guessing.
But I've got a really bad feeling about this book.

Not oversharing, not too honest, more "spot on target" to a central delicate issue or two.

Maybe something that hasn't really been "solved".

James and Nora Joyce and Jean Rhys

Joyce's continuing interest, even with his clouded sight, in the details of women's clothes was not confined to Nora's. The novelist Jean Rhys always liked James Joyce because at a party in Paris he...
