#Palestine / "Netanyahu Should Only Be Pardoned if He Leaves Political Life" ... former Israeli supreme court chief's pardon stance contradicts decades of whitewashing international law violations

Former Israeli Supreme Court President Aharon Barak argues against pardoning #Netanyahu before conviction, because he's concerned about political motivations and proper legal procedures.

Barak's 28-year judicial record shows systematic whitewashing of Israeli violations of international law. His court maintained 100% approval rates for Palestinian administrative detention, upheld house demolitions as collective punishment, authorized targeted killings, and deliberately rejected #ICJ rulings on the separation wall.

In fact, legal analysts note Barak's court provided "cloak of legality" for settlement expansion while systematically ignoring international law and Palestinian rights.

'“I don’t know what the judges will rule in the end, but the general feeling — including among the lawyers — is that the judges are going to overrule [Deri’s] appointment. Even if our arguments were correct, they won’t value them because of what Levin did,” the source said, expressing frustration and anger that Levin had not consulted with Shas officials before making his announcement.'

I think that part of the problem the current governing coalition has is that they don't understand that courts generally don't base their decisions on petty considerations like these.

Judges aim to apply consistent principles, fairly. At least more than politicians whose principles seem to shift a little too often.
