‘The land is tearing itself apart’: life on a collapsing #Arctic isle

On #Qikiqtaruk, off Canada, researchers at the frontier of #ClimateChange are seeing its rich ecology slide into the sea as #MeltingPermafrost ice leaves little behind

“It’s one thing to think about what the changes mean to us, but I can’t imagine the fear and stress the animals feel as everything changes so fast. We’re supposed to be the guardians of the land. But we’ve let them down.” - Richard Gordon.

"Armed with a fleet of drones and working closely with Indigenous Inuvialuit rangers, the team has revealed a rapid reshaping of the tundra with little precedent. As they race to understand what those changes might mean, a combination of rising seas, landslides and flooding mean the landscape is literally collapsing around them, making it harder to study an island that reflects the tumultuous future of the western Arctic."

New Inuvialuit-led conservation area in the Yukon will safeguard wildlife, habitat, and Inuvialuit traditional use

The Agreement ensures the conservation and protection of almost 8,500 km² of the Eastern Yukon North Slope called Aullaviat/Anguniarvik

The area is larger than Banff National Park and is an important contribution toward Canada’s goal of conserving 30 percent of lands and waters in Canada by 2030

#Inuit group calls for bigger role in #ClimateAction

The Inuit Circumpolar Council is seeking to bring the effects of #Arctic #CimateChange on their communities to the attention of participants of the #COP28 conference in Dubai

Alaska Beacon, via Indian Country Today
Dec 8, 2023

"The #InuitCircumpolarCouncil includes representatives in #Alaska, #Canada, #Greenland and #Russia. It is one of the six international #Indigenous organizations that have decision-making power at the eight-nation #ArcticCouncil. The Inuit Circumpolar Council has a COP 28 delegation, to include Alaska members.

"One key issue highlighted in the position paper is the Loss and Damage Fund that was created at last year’s COP 27 held in Egypt. As it is structured now, the fund is focused on helping poorer nations in the #GlobalSouth address the impacts of climate change.

"That leaves a big gap, said Inuit Circumpolar Chair #SaraOlsvig of Greenland.

"'This means that as it is structured now, Inuit and other Arctic #IndigenousPeoples will not have access to the fund, although we are among those most impacted by climate change,' Olsvig said by email. Given the rapid rate of Arctic warming and associated effects, 'the inclusion of Inuit in any policy and decision-making is of great importance,' she said."
